This painting is one of my favorite abstract palm trees completed last year, 2015. 

Painting is a joy...and still a challenge. 

From 2007 through now, I've slowly abstracted more and more of my art works. I'm almost four years into painting a series of palm trees.

I imagine myself in a helicopter, hovering over an empty beach with only palm trees observing the ocean waves.

The wooden "coins" have laminating film and dried oil paint. The rest of the design uses acrylics.

This design began as a small section of a full page doodle. I really loved the curves, comparing with the straight lines, and the ambiguity of the shapes.

When I look at this design, I do see a palm tree in bloom against an ocean background. I also see butterflies, dragonflies, their flights trailing in the sky.

A great class is only as great as the continuing to use the things you learned and did in class in your regular daily work. 

That great class was Abstractions by Lisa Call. Ok...so it's another great class I have enjoyed by her. 2015 had TWO workshops: Abstractions taken online and Leslie Saeta's Palette Knife Painting. 2016 opens with another workshop...one that I have been chasing since 2008 to take. 

Both of these classes have yielded most of the paintings enjoyed during this 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge. The palette knife techniques are in the oil paintings of traditional and more realistic designs. The abstract designs are created from prompts and techniques learned from class. 

I close with an abstract mixed media painting of a palm tree...of course, LOL. 

Tomorrow is bonus day, to open my birthday month!

Prussian blue. Oh, what a rich, delicious, luscious, midnight summers, bright starred blue! It sets off the collaged palm tree shapes well!

There are three large drawers of collage materials in my art studio. A future task is to sort the colors into separate boxes....

This painting began with a coloring page I made on a page of an old chemistry book. This page is still in black and white...but it became this design. The giraffes kept loping across the plains of Africa on this page.

One skill I recently learned was how to make a proper transfer. I've seen countless videos, read books, heard...and finally the lightbulb flashed ON! 

Such a simple little technique...ever have something simple seem like one of the most difficult tasks? 

The paint on my palette aided by a color design book rounded out this design. It reminds me of one of my favorite candies: Lifesavers. Hmm. I might have to pick up a roll of those next time I am at the grocery store!

There are three junk drawers and various paper books in my studio. My sketchbook has lots of ideas. At times, they merge into collaged design. 

This is one of my favorite abstracted palm trees this year. The papers were intentionally chosen for their textures, both actual and painted. The only words were intentionally left: calibrated for life's bumpy roads. It is a little busy to both your eyes and your fingers, but the paper designs do give a flow. 

Andy & I were flying to Virginia this summer. I was writing furiously in my sketchbook, mind mapping, drawing. Andy began peeking over my seat to see. I covered the page. He asked oh, I can't read that? My reply was not right now. Time sometimes is distance from how I am feeling. What I write is mine and self-centered and can hurt someone (not that there was something like that in this occasion). My sketchbooks hold pieces of me...but I do cover up and encrypt the items that are ugly to me...but at least those are out of my system!

I decided to make a mini-series of paintings within my palm tree paintings. I love the geometric shapes and movement but stillness of Gray Sun Day Abstract Palm Tree. While flying to see Karson and Reagan, my sketchbook filled with a dozen ideas for new paintings. This is one of four that are in queue waiting for paint. 

My sketchbook is always with me...and if not there is pen and paper. Scraps of paper are glued into my sketchbooks with ideas for paintings and designs. Sometimes those ideas make it to canvas...other times they wait...other times they never make it. 

Whenever you see me, go ahead and ask about my sketchbook. What I don't want anyone to read is encrypted, covered, and scribbled. The only one who really sees my sketchbooks is Andy. Andy admitted to me that sometimes he'll pick up my current book and thumb through it. He is allowed...!

Jackie Chan movies make me laugh while fascinating me. How he moves! I adore watching Shaolin kung fu...even if I can't fight my way out of a paper bag! 

The colors of this are very Chinese with the golds and reds. It was intentional...as a small nod to celebrating the Chinese New Year this past February.

Confession time...I have a day job. It's very left-brained logical cut and dry work with a dash of puzzle solving. I mention this because management thought it was a great idea to make wooden nickels for use for free meals in the cafeteria. Most of the nickels landed in the trash after the offer expired, except for bunch rescued by me, the pack rat artist. 

Three of the wooden nickels are used in this little palm tree abstract painting. Acrylic flakes from the hardware store are in this piece, too.  

My day job supplies me with some fascinating materials...does yours? What do you rescue from your day job?

This was the first painting finished after sinus surgery in April. A walk around the nearby park had me stopping at every bench for a time out. I can breathe! I can breathe! 

I love the muted colors of this abstract palm tree. The blues are pieces of hope, like blue skies glimpsed between gray clouds.

Day 7: Gray Sun Day Abstract Palm Tree Painting

I was cautiously optimistic when this was painted. 

It was just after surgery and I was still scared that I was not going to feel better and breathe better than I was. 

The bright yellow and blues...contrasted with the neutral gray and darker blues matched my mood. 

I do feel better. I can smell the rain! I can smell sunshine heat on the asphalt! 

It's 7 days into the #30Paintingin30Days challenge!!!!! I have so many more paintings and designs to share with you! Some paintings await your enjoyment since March...some a much shorter time.

There are scraps of a book, paint, perhaps markers. 

I was recovering when this design showed up and I left it as it is. I love it...it makes me feel calm and curious and allows me to mind wander through safe territory.

Day 4: Two Palm Frond View Abstract Original Painting

At the beginning of this calendar year, I enjoyed the opportunity to take Lisa Call's Abstractions online class. She's offering it again if you are interested...but I digress!

If you've guessed, I love palm trees. I grew up in Miami, Florida and palm trees are just about every where. I will date myself and mention Miami Vice...LOL. 

There are palm trees that are made of triangles, of rhombuses, of circles, of obtuse and acute angles. There are soft flowers and hard bright berries. This design, ah, this design totally simplifies two palm fronds to the essential shapes. Sometimes I look out our favorite Thai restaurant's window...and there are some amazing palm tree shapes!

Day 2 of 30: Royo Abstract Palm Tree Painting

This isn't my favorite palm tree abstract painting...but I cannot bring it upon myself to paint over it.

Something is goofy yet compelling....

Have you ever looked up at a palm tree and swore you could count individual leaves? How the wind spreads them apart and you see just a few leaves? I was thinking of a windblown day like the recent ones we've had because of the "remnants of Hurricane Erika." 

We had a few days of rainy (not soggy) weather...and as I write this, WH (Wonderful Husband) and I just left our pool and sunshine. We are very grateful to skip cleaning our yard after a storm!
