Confession time...I have a day job. It's very left-brained logical cut and dry work with a dash of puzzle solving. I mention this because management thought it was a great idea to make wooden nickels for use for free meals in the cafeteria. Most of the nickels landed in the trash after the offer expired, except for bunch rescued by me, the pack rat artist. 

Three of the wooden nickels are used in this little palm tree abstract painting. Acrylic flakes from the hardware store are in this piece, too.  

My day job supplies me with some fascinating materials...does yours? What do you rescue from your day job?

Day 6: Blue Philosophy of Palm Trees Abstract

I keep finding new things to see in this palm tree design. 

There are scraps of a book, paint, perhaps markers. 

I was recovering when this design showed up and I left it as it is. I love it...it makes me feel calm and curious and allows me to mind wander through safe territory.

Swimming Sea Monster Dragons - Original Mixed Media Art

In case you thought I was done with dragons, well, dragons are not done with me. Swimming Sea Monster Dragons is inspired by Wonderful Andy & I's trip to New Foundland, Canada in 2013 and a blister package. 

Andy & I have a deal. We will buy almost any tool he needs...as long as the tool gets used at least once. My thoughts are either pay a handyman or do it ourselves (which usually means Andy does it himself because I'm clueless) and have tools. I pounced on this blister package before it made it to the curb! Don't ask me what the hell was contained by this blister package. Other than tools, my answer would be Sea Monsters! 

My friend Karla had an influence on this art work, as did Julie Fei-Fan Balzar with the use of my own self cut and designed stencils. Thank you to both of you for your help! 

These sea monsters were caught happily hunting in fertile waters. It's the middle of winter, but the water is warm and plentiful. This might be a small family, hunting together, or best friends. All I can see is that the top one is the closest, but s/he looks friendly and happy. Just stay far enough away for them to catch fish instead of humans, lol!

In Honor of the Royal Original Mixed Media Art

In Honor of the Royal, 8 x 8 inches, mixed media on canvas board, 2015, $100

On Saturday, August 16th, 2014, there was a terrific thunder and lightning storm at our home, the A2 Resort (A2 means A-squared, but can't make the 2 superscript in many programs, lol). It was about 5 pm and Andy and I were watching the storm from our enclosed back patio. Lightning boomed, Simon cat scratched my leg, Andy yelled, I whimpered, and ashes were floating down best they could in a downpour of rain. The lightning hit our royal palm tree. 

We saw it. We saw the trenches in the grass where the lightning traveled. Lucky for us, the strike traveled away from the house. Our royal palm tree kept us safe. 

We kept hope that it would live...but our once lovely royal palm tree may last a sad month more. The new frond that is supposed to be green and proud grew out as brown and burnt, and the rest of the fronds are turning brown and bending at strange sad angles. We would let the tree trunk stand...but with it's height of about 30 feet and only one place to safely land without damaging further property...so much for the woodpeckers who are beginning to check it out as a new home. 

I didn't intend for this art piece to be commemorative, but after choosing the brown papers and silver background, it feels like In Honor of the Royal.

I Bite - Mixed Media Art

This little monster has been living in my sketchbook for a couple of weeks, lol. He could look very different, but he did make Andy laugh out loud last night when I shared him. I won't call him a dragon...but he does has some traits of a dragon, lol.

This is another blister package artwork. 

This little monster comes with a big warning: I Bite! He bites by making you laugh, he and I hope, lol!

Yellow Dragon - Take the Leap

2014 was a rough mental year for me. I was too afraid to take some leaps...while other leaps seemed insurmountable. This little yellow dragon was a happy accident that appeared while playing with aluminum foil and stencils. 

Yellow Dragon, Take the Leap! reminds me that we sometimes forget we have wings. Even if you don't have wings...you truly can't tell how far away you might be from a dream coming true. 

My dream? To one day have my artwork sustain itself and me and Andy. That is a HUGE humongous so big SCARY hard work needed take the leap dream for me...that I have to remember that I can make small leaps....

Ah, happy accidents. While cutting pieces for another mixed media piece using pieces of denim fabric...the scraps made up this palm tree. 

Lucky me, the background with the texture was all ready for adding a design.

Paper bag, denim, and acrylic paints were used to create this mixed media palm tree art.

Lipstick Miami Palm Tree Painting

This painting was saved from the scrape heap by Bianca. I showed her this painting for an outside the studio opinion. Bianca immediately exclaimed over it Omigosh it looks so Miami! The colors! Why are you thinking of starting it over? I love it! I wish I could use these colors all over my home!  

It was one of those moments I was glad I was sitting. There are a few things I do like about this one...but...lol, hey, sometimes as an artist I truly do NOT know what others would like.

In any case, this is a new painting added to the exhibit for April's Chefs on the Run change and the Absence of Green 2 exhibit for the Homestead Chamber of Commerce.

Reds Cubist Style Palm Trees Painting

My last blog post about this painting was showing it in progress. Since it is now finished...lol...it is again being shared.

This week I remain on day shift at my day job. The podcast Artists Helping Artists had another excellent radio show recently, entitled Artists with Day Jobs: Working Full Time and Having an Art Career. YEP! That's me! I totally identify!!!!! If you're curious about that topic and why I identify so much, hop over and listen. The show is well crafted to make you feel like you are listening to friends in the middle of your own home. I invite myself over to the show all the time, lol. 

Speaking of working full time...my schedule is going to shift to peaks. For the next five weeks my job is taking most of my time, however, I WILL

1. continue to paint daily, even if for 15 minutes or to set up my next project, etc. 

2. work out minimum of 30 minutes daily

3. enjoy every Saturday off shared with my wonderful Husband Andy by allowing myself to skip #1 and #2. 

In the meantime, did you remember that I have a 52 Paintings in 52 Weeks Challenge going on? Yeah, I forgot, too...except to keep track of how many completed paintings I have. So...next post will be a recap of all my 2014 paintings.

2014 Painting Progress Report

2014 is full of challenges...and instead of making one HUGE tedious report at the END of the year that is already gone...here is my check in to you....

Progress Report Item 1:
2014 is my year to paint 52 Paintings in 52 Weeks. So far, I am meeting that goal...see the collage? YAY!!!! 

It's been about 9 weeks and although I know I've more finished paintings to share with you, these are ones you've seen so far. My "to-photo" bag is ready for another batch of paintings to share, lol. 

My rules for the 52 in 52 include that the finished painting has to be 8 x 8 inches or larger. Just in case you were wondering why my 30 Paintings in 30 Days were not included here.

Progress Report Item 2: 
I've been staying after my health this year and managing my allergies. Managing my allergies means I can breath, so I feel well, so I can work out. Using some DVDs and FitnessBlender.com, I have lost body fat although not weight. So far, so good but not great. 

Progress Report Item 3:
I'm keeping up with the social media and even added Twitter to my mix. Right now, this is enough and sometimes more to handle. 
I'm also part of 15 Zero to Hero Challenge by Holly Surgue. It's Day 8.... Although I am just smacking up my videos to my YouTube challenge, it's enough that I am showing up and doing the challenge. 

Progress Report Item 4:
Upcoming exhibit is May 1st at the Homestead Community Center that has space for 30 paintings. I am focused on making 30 new paintings by May 1st so that I can swap out at Chefs on the Run Restaurant before hanging at the Center. Chefs is getting new art while the Center gets my older paintings. Keep in mind, thought, that most of my "old" palm tree paintings are less than two years old because the series began at the end of 2012. 
For this item, I have a loooooooong way to go. 

Focus for March and April:
Keep you all in touch with what's going on in paintings.
PAINT PAINT PAINT PAINT PAINT
Work out. Work out. Work out.
...doing all with a day job that is requiring overtime. LOL 

So, if I were harsh on myself, I would be earning a C. Kind to myself is a B. Participation is an A. Overall, B-. Considering all the goings on not included here, I'm very happy with a B-. I'll work on a few more As, though, lol.

Protest in a Museum by Breaking a Vase

Imagine you are an artist...one who lives in Miami, Florida, who visits galleries and museums.

Most of the galleries and museums in South Florida display art by international artists. Some display a mix of artists from all over the world, including the United States. Some specialize in a niche market such as only Cuban expressionism from 1940-1970, etc. Most of the galleries and museums that might display local artists are vanity galleries, as in the artist pays for the wall space and gets little more service for those fees in return.

Imagine you are this artist and you do not have a "bridge job" or a "bridge career." 

What do you do? 

WUM REBLOG: Cuban-born, Miami-based Artist Maximo Caminero Destroyed $1M Ai Weiwei Vase at PAMM | WUM

The artist in the link above decided to drop another's vase in protest of treatment of local artist. 

The vase was part of a lager installation piece at a major museum by a hugely known international artist who truly does know how to stage real and effective protests (Ai Weiwei is Chinese and has spent time in Chinese jails for being "anti-government." 

Having lived in Miami, Florida my entire life...and luckily having that bridge career...all I can do is shake my head with wonder and understanding of how this artists feels. I will stage a protest...sure...but it will be by continuing to make my own art, sharing it online as much as I can, exhibiting at Chefs on the Run and the Homestead Chamber of Commerce and other places as much as humanly possible...

Not by breaking another artist's work at a major museum. Way to black ball yourself... or maybe bad press beats nothing at all. 

In any case, too bad the artist did not read the following post.

7 Reasons for Making Small Paintings

One of my favorites from January's 30 in 30 challenge. Day 19. Still
available for $28, Balboa Tree Memories

1. Small projects in different stages of finish help me feel like progress is happening.

2. Smaller paintings are more affordable for those interested in my art.

3. Smaller paintings allow more options on how to display them.

4. Experimenting on a small surface is not as scary.

5. Less materials are used but with a greater visual impact overall. 

6. Less storage space is needed for inventory.

7. The gratification of finishing a painting occurs more often and helps me keep going as an artist.

Lately, I've been asking myself if I want to paint larger than the occasional 11 x 14 inch canvas. Myself answers with "not really...." When I ask myself why...all those reasons listed show up in my mind. My favorite reason is #7...because that moment of "Yay! It's done! Next one!" keep me returning to my sketchbooks and studio.  

In case you are new to my last couple of years art work, my art work has included the following sizes: 
3 x 5 inches, 
4 x 6 inches, 
8 x 8 inches, 
12 x 12 inches, and 
11 x 14 inches.

Cubist Palm Trees Painting

Oh, this was a fun project. 

Ever look at a painting and wonder How did s/he do that? I want to know how to do that because it looks so cool! Where do I learn to do THAT? 

For the last few years, I keep a folder in Evernote tagged workshops. Every shiny-thing workshop that comes along gets placed into the page with that tag. One page has in-person workshops that happen every year such as Create by Cloth Scissors Paper. The other page has online-only workshops, such as New York City's Modern Museum of Art's Experimenting with Collage.

The online Experimenting with Collage's first project was to paint a still life in the style of cubism. Now I know how to do this! Painting in this style is addicting, and will have to do another soon with different colors. With a palm tree some where in each because palm trees are my current series, lol.

Snow in Florida with Palm Trees Day 30 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

So. Seems like this week there's been a bit of snow along the Florida-Georgia line. I can just imagine how the few palm trees in that area may be feeling: c-c-c-old! 

If you've ever driven through Florida, the numbers of palm trees increase as you drive south. You would think about now, well DUH, but truly, it's interesting to watch the vegetation changes. Besides...you would never equate snow with palm trees...but this week you could.

It is THE END of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge TODAY. The toughest part for me is this uploading and posting and "linkzing" on Leslie Saeta's blog and sharing on the social media sites. All of this is part of the challenge and am so proud that I've survived. 

If you're scared that means less art, be reassured that I have so many ideas bouncing, especially with my little mannequin and plaster head involved, that there are PLENTY of opportunities to share with you the still upcoming 2014. No puns were intended within this paragraph...and I type this super tired of staring at a screen, LOL.

Elephants in Forest Day 29 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

Ah, elephants. I remember riding one at Silver Springs, Florida waaaaay back in 1979(?). Maybe it was some other Florida park? I just remember be way at the top, in the front...and so amazed and happy up on this elephant. There is a photo of me some where. 

Fast forward to 2007, visiting South Africa. Oh what beautiful creatures!!! Mine in this little design are goofy and content, gazing up at the colorful forest and sky that peaks through the trees. They make their way leisurely to a watering hole. They are very large, but the trees tower over them any way. We humans are a safe long distance away, just enjoying their moment.
