How to Paint a Rose from Video Series

Rose Demo - 2009 - ©Angeline Marie
How to Paint a Rose With Oils —powered by eHow.com

Little matter that this video is over a year old...the information is still relevant. Painting a rose in about a minute was a challenge, even if I think it did turn out more like a carnation. I still like it, but am not sure I kept it.

Changes since that video shot in December, 2009 (or was it July?) are
1. the studio where it was shot is no longer available to me
2. those jeans are long gone
3. the large painting in the background is finished
4. any videos since are produced by me (so know how much work goes in each).

Life changes...life goes on...but we always have adventures! Speaking of adventures, will share one with me? On May 7th, at Dharma Studio during Coconut Grove's Second Saturday Art Walk, my art will be on display this evening from 7pm to 11pm. The art and event is friends and family friendly! More details coming soon!

Video - Cutting Wood for a Cradleboard

As an artist, I try to be creative with materials and my costs. The actual time to cut this little piece of wood was more like four minutes, but you are welcome to watch for less than two. After this fun experience, it reinforces my need of buying art supplies ready for paint instead of assembling anything before or after the fact.

Special thanks to Andy, who filmed and helped narrate this video.

This video is less than two minutes in length.

The actual idea I was trying to assemble is the "cradleboard" that is 3/4 inches thick, as can be seen if you click through to DickBlick.

If you have any ideas of art stuff you would like to see in video, please leave me a comment.

Hope you enjoy the goofiness of our video!

Framing: How-To Choose the Color & Style for a Painting

This blog post is dedicated to Mark. You are not the first to ask me these questions, and I am sure you won't be the last. =) This how-to frame is more for canvas. A future blog post will be how to frame a painting on paper, because this one is long enough!

1. Take a good look around the room in which the painting is going to hang. Look at the colors of the furniture, paying particular attention to the woods and metals.

2. Check if the painting is on
   a. stretched canvas with no visible staples on the sides, framing is optional, especially if the sides are painted.
   b. stretched canvas with visible staples on the sides, framing is necessary. A mat is optional.
   c. on paper, glass or plexiglass and a frame are necessary.

3. Take the painting with you to the frame store. A great place that has plenty of choices is Michael’s. Target and Walmart will do well for paintings on paper, but will be challenging for the deeper frames needed for canvas.

4. At the frame store, choose wood frames that match the a color
   a. in the room where the painting is to hang.
   b. in the painting
   c. do chose a non-dominant color in the painting.

5. Pay attention to the style of the frame, whether it is simple or ornate. The more simple, the more attention is given to the painting.

6. Place the painting in the frame, or set it on the glass of the frame. You should know whether you like the look or not. Try to narrow it down to two frames.

7. If there is a customer or store associate near by, ask their opinion of the two frames you have chosen.

8. If you are not sure, buy both frames if the store has a good return policy. What is the worst case scenario? You visit to return one of the frames.

The Barnacle State Park - 3 Colors 1 Brush with Eric Speyer

What a great afternoon. It is rare that an artist offers an afternoon workshop on ONE day, and make it reasonably affordable! Eric Speyer decided to have one with the help of Windisch-Hunt Fine Art. The theme of the workshop was "3 Colors, 1 Brush," and we could use watercolors or oils. Of course, I had to differ, and took acrylics.

We met right outside of the state park, the Barnacle, located in Coconut Grove, Florida. It is a small park, with many great little corners in which to get lost. It is one of the oldest properties in Miami-Dade, Florida. When Hurricane Andrew came through in 1992, the majority of it was destroyed. The boathouse, the home, and the grounds have since been restored, and quite beautiful. There are benches every where for you to sit and enjoy the breeze that is always blowing off the water. It is in the middle of the Grove, but you have to know it is there. For a $2 donation, you could spend the entire day there, enjoying the water, sailboats, and grounds. There are special events held there, such as concerts, etc., so choose wisely!

Any way, Eric directed us to view the same scene - the house as seen from the water. All of us did the same scene, but interesting how each of us view the world. I am only posting mine. We spent almost three hours painting the scene, and each of us finished. Of the five of us (including Eric), one was 8x10 in. and all the rest were 11x14 in. Besides having only three colors and one brush, the idea was to capture the light at the scene as quickly as possible. Hence, everyone was finished in three hours.

Pretty good job for an afternoon!

Moving blues

Geesh. Everyone hates moving. Ever try moving an artist?

One question that gets asked is "what do you think is your heaviest item?" Well, I don't know! I would think if all the stretched canvas is boxed, the weight would be high. Remember those old crates full of vinyl records? Think larger boxes, same weight. Then, I hate the idea of packing all of them into boxes, just because of the various different sizes! I have to laugh at myself....

Andy is being extremely patient with me. In the midst of all this, I keep picking up ideas and more stuff. I want to stop and paint, and there is another box to pack! This will soon pass, and my new studio has a north facing window.

What is special about a north facing window? THE LIGHT!!!! Go find the window at your place that faces north. It is very true what is said - the north light is the BEST. Does that room always seem to stay cool, but brighter than the rest of your place? Yippee! Of course, when I work it is usually at night, so those lights (warm & cool) will be installed (THANKS, ANDY!).

In the middle of the move, actions from Artist Entrepreneur Institute continue!
Have a great day! (It's like 0625, yeech.)
