My Last Art Studio?

Photos from my current art studio. Art studio officially opened in June, 2012 after many changes, moves, cleaning, and organizing. It is a work in progress - but it is a dream come true. Special thanks to my husband of almost four months, Andy!!!!

How to Visit An Art Studio

One plan to push my creativity and inspiration is to invite friends over for tea and cookies...an open studio a la Marcus McAllister.


Marcus' philosophy is to invite everyone over to his home studio on Sunday afternoons for tea and cookies. If someone visits, he is happy. If no one visits, he is still in his favorite space creating art. What a wonderful idea!

Which brings me to Cate Prato's blog article How to Visit An Art Studio at Cloth Paper Scissors. Cate does an excellent job describing 10 things to expect when artists open their studio to everyone.

The idea of having an open studio event in my own art studio appeals to me. First things first, though: getting back into my studio to MAKE ART. Been a while...but stay tuned as I "leave" my sketchbooks and "return" to canvas and other art projects.

New, New, New and Learning, Learning, Learning!

It is a crazy life lately.

Paris. New occupational bondage (unrelated to art). Packing up a home. Moving into new, permanent home. Boxes every where. Boxes every where since 9/24/11.

Special thanks to Angie and her family for the art supplies. Ms. Leon - I can hear you from heaven, laughing that you got your way.

The mess in my new space is due to just throwing things into boxes when leaving the our other home.  The rhythm in this art space is trash, trash, donation, pick storage space, trash, trash, donation, donation, pick storage space....

As for creating new art, most drawings and paintings are in sketchbooks. I cling to making new drawings daily since Paris, France. That means there are over 60 sketches....

Comfy chair to think.

Boxes, boxes, boxes...stuff, stuff, stuff.

Evolution of an Art Studio

Moving art supplies and home made me stop and think at the evolution of my art studio over the years. This is a quick list of how my art studio space has evolved over the last 12 years.


1. Dining room table and/or bedroom corner (both spaces required take down every two weeks).
2. 10 x 10 foot space with only two usable walls and very limited storage. 
3. 10 x 10 foot space with LOTS of wall space and limited storage.
4. Travel package of watercolors, two pens, a pencil, a pencil sharpener, and a sketchbook and a box 13 x 9 x 7 inches, all kept on the coffee table in the living room.
5. FUTURE SPACE: 19 x 17 foot space with wonderful windows, LOTS of wall space, storage, floor space...truly a dream coming true.

Rhythm of Encaustic Painting

Between the possibilities and the toys, working with encaustics is sheer fun. Although always fearful and respectful of heat and fire, it is amazing how much I am loving this paint. The melting of wax and resin mix, torches and heat guns, carving tools...super magical fun!

Encaustic painting goes something like this:
melt
apply
cool
heat
carve
cool
heat
apply
cool
torch
heat
melt
apply...



At every heat and torch moment there is a change. Maybe I will get better at predicting the beautiful accidents, but I enjoy most of the surprises that happen to the paint when it melts on the board.

Encaustic Workshop Adventure in Key West, Florida

How art workshop was found...
While Andy and I were enjoying the Boat Races in Key West, November, 2010, we stopped at the historical local bar The Green Parrot. I spotted a very shiny, pretty, and large catalog printed by The Studios of Key West. Being the pack rat, the catalog made it back to the Cypress House Inn with us and then home.

Encaustic workshop!!!! Only 12 students allowed? No flight expense? Over a long holiday weekend? Stay at the Cypress House Inn Key West? No snow? Car parked for the weekend, and within walking distance? What if the class is already full (it is November, and it is impossible but the snow birds)?!!! It is more economical to work with books but I miss people....Ok...but do I like the work this artist makes with encaustics?


Decisions and Goals
After quick research from home (thank God for Google), reviewing Kim Bernard's art, philosophy, video, and everything I could find, within a week the class was booked. 


If you are on the goals for 2011 adventure with me (due by 1-31-11), this meets my goals of learning more about a technique, working with other artists, and travelling. This also meets the budget, because there is no car rental or flight required!

About the artist: Encaustic is a wax based paint that is kept molten on a heated palette.

Level II: Students will learn advanced skills such as building supports and textures, preparing surfaces, fusing with other tools and techniques, mixing ecaustics with pigments, creating transparent layers and glaze effects, creating monotypes, scraping and scribing, assemblage, stenciling and pour techniques.  

Bird Road Art District (BRAD) New Art Walk!!!

It was a gorgeous evening on October 16th, 2010 for the first Bird Road Art District (BRAD) Art Walk. From 7pm to 10 pm, artists showed of their work and fans asked questions and enjoyed conversations. Andy and I went for a stroll and see my friends and a few new-to-us studios.

Video - Cutting Wood for a Cradleboard

As an artist, I try to be creative with materials and my costs. The actual time to cut this little piece of wood was more like four minutes, but you are welcome to watch for less than two. After this fun experience, it reinforces my need of buying art supplies ready for paint instead of assembling anything before or after the fact.

The actual idea I was trying to assemble is the "cradleboard" that is 3/4 inches thick, as can be seen if you click through to DickBlick.

FAT Village, June, 2010

After hearing so much about the FAT Village Art Walk this year, I finally took the drive up to Fort Lauderdale after enjoying sushi with my friend Norma (who prefers to take photos). 

The FAT Village involves great art and a short walk to mingle with artists meaning more time in the studios that truly interest you. The spaces are actually artist studios, which makes this different than a "gallery art walk." The friendly artists share their creative spaces with visitors as everyone mingles. All of the studios are so close to each other, neither Norma or I felt we had much of work out after dinner! 

I wish the FAT Village was closer to my home! The studio spaces are comfortable, even the small ones seemed spacious, and all the doors lead out to the street. As an artist, I am drooling for the spaces...but, I am extremely grateful my wonderfully private and in-my-home studio.
