This fruit stand we visited with Leslie Saeta was super friendly and pintoresco. The stand is family owned and run. Most of the family was there while we painted: mother who owns it, son who helps run it, son's daughters that were hanging out there. 

It was a very hot day...and Leigh Buffington, a fellow student, granted me a huge complement: the painting conveys just how hot and sunny it was during our visit to the fruit stand. 

I loved the fruit stand as you can tell...but thankfully the kooky Robert Is Here is near us and when the weather cools and the mosquitos die off a bit...well...expect me to be out there painting! 

The title is Berries Advertised, But because if you notice there are only oranges in the main areas...LOL.

Sketches Done at the Beach

When I leave home, the wallet, keys, cell phone, pencil sharpener, sketchbook, and pencil go with me. I never know what I will find to sketch. Going to the beach is different in only that in addition to the basics, I take a little ink and a few brushes. The beach is a great place for plein aire painting and drawing!

These are quick sketches of people and clouds. Can you tell these are beach scenes?

The Winners Are...! Deering Estate's Affaire En Plein Aire Event Day 2

We had such a great time this weekend at the Deering Estate! The sun finally broke clouds at about 2 pm today, about an hour before judging. No matter what the weather, paint outs do happen!

What are "Plein Aire" Events?

Plein Aire is fancy for painting done out of doors. Any type of paint will do: watercolor, oil, acrylics, tempera, etc. As long as the painting is done outside, the painting can be considered "en plein aire."

This event happens to be a contest, with rules for the participating artists. Here are a few:

1. All paintings or drawings must be created at the place, during the contest hours. Contest hours for this event are  Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm, Sunday from 9 am to noon.

2. All supports (another name for canvas, or paper, or wood, etc. used to hold the paint) must be blank at the start of the contest. This will be checked upon arrival. Textures are fine to have, as long as blank.

3. All paintings or drawings must stay overnight. This is to avoid work on the art during non-contest hours.

4. All work entered is juried. There are prizes, but the experience is enough for most artists. 

The best part of the contest is working with artists that are unfamiliar to me, seeing new perspectives, and being outside in the beautiful South Florida weather.

Announcement: Deering Estate's “Affair En Plein Aire”

The Deering Estate and GroveHouse Artists present "Affair En Plein Aire" on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18th, 2010.

Who: Artists from South Florida, event given by Deering Estate & GroveHouse Artists.

When: April 17 & 18, Saturday 9 am to 4 pm, Sunday 9 am to 3:30 pm (Judging results given at approximately 3 pm)

What: Artists create work while at the Deering Estate during the contest hours. Completed art work is juried for a later exhibit.

Where: The Deering Estate, Miami, FL (follow link for directions)

How: Tour the Deering Estate grounds while visiting over a dozen artists painting scenes of the park. This is a rare time that many artists are in one location, creating art in different media!

If you are like me, there are many events happening that weekend such as the yearly Miami-Dade Baynanza Event. The Deering Estate participates in Baynanza every year. Last year, many of the volunteers visited artists after they helped clean up the park. It was great talking about the beautiful grounds with the volunteers while I painted. Come on out and support a great park and two events!

When an Artist Judge is GREAT!

All artists know the drill: you enter an event with your art, and you are rejected or accepted. Each time, most times, the artist has to guess as to why he/she was accepted or rejected. Judges don't have the time to explain.

Sometimes, things are different. I love doing plein aire events, a.k.a paint outs a.k.a quick draws. I have had two great judges of events, and I must say it was not because I placed in the event. It was the judge took the time either before or after presenting awards to speak to all/most of the artist participants. The judge that stayed around instead of rushing off to some other place and never letting us meet them.

The first artist, Beth Ravitz [www.bethravitz.com/], explained how she chose the awards. Beth chose each for not just beauty and color, but also took into consideration the individual styles. She chose not just realistic "photographic" art, but also impressionistic and almost abstract works. She wanted a cross section of the best of each type of style. Beth took the few minutes and explained that to the group. It's been about 3 years since that Pinecrest Gardens event, and I still remember her!

Today, it was Gregory Little [http://www.gregorylittle.com] who took the time after judging to speak to each participating artist. He took the time to give me what was great about my art piece [based on Harrison Street, Hollywood, Florida] and what could be improved the next event. He was aware that I had some experience painting outdoors, and little painting street scenes and buildings. Greg took a few minutes to review these things, and he will always be remembered by me.

On My Own Adventures - originally from 5-1-09

Wow. First blog with no pictures. I feel so under-exposed!!!

This weekend’s plans include a BBQ, perhaps a sky dive (yes, me, scared of heights), and yes, ART.

To my knowledge, it is now “off-season,” which means that art events like plein aires are not scheduled again until sometime in the fall. That means I’ll be at the beach! Plenty to entertain me there!

I am missing Baruj’s class. The last class I attended was in February. Took advantage that Andy had some Saturdays off to play, and then work happened!!! Now that work is out...until the next outrage...

I can be found at Pinecrest Gardens, trying watercolors of all things. See, I saw Eric Speyer work with watercolors at the last paint. He moves the paint like I love to move acrylics: fast, with energy, decisive. None of this masking and delicate stuff that looks sooo painful.

So, after watching him for a little while, I decided to get my own gear (thanks Utrecht, for the sale!) and will be trying it tomorrow.
