What Happens when Wood Work is Done

Painting has commenced!

Andy and I have been running through 2011. We are always on the go, having fun, and rarely home. Studio time is grabbed in short chunks, blogging is still meeting my goal of a minimum of two posts a week, and my sketchbooks are getting full. Andy finally cleaned the garage...to cut the wood we bought for a sponsored project way back in March. 

Andy, my fiance, is the artist for today's blog post. He dutifully and lovingly cut the wood for me. He went over board and made the frame and back board. Andy has very high standards, and the frame is well done and beautiful. It is almost sad to see it covered in paint. 

Thank you, Andy, for the cut wood. Without you, projects like these (and less expensive painting supports) would be impossible for me.

Landscape Painting - on wood

I truly enjoy doing paintings on different surfaces: woods, boxes, concrete, etc. This week, I found a broken wine bottle wood box and took the lid. The size and texture of the wood so caught my attention, I dumpster dived (ok, it was on the top of a garbage can & clean)...a very bad habit, according to Andy. Can't help it, because next one of my paintings may be on an empty bottle of wine. I digress....

This little piece is  ~4 x 13 inches done with acrylics on wood. The wood grain lines reminded me of being on flight and looking down to see the fields. I love watching the lines and textures of the fields from the air...the colors! So beautiful...and a different view on landscapes. The lines are based on the wood's existing grain lines, as wide and thin as they were. The piece is based on memories, not of any one place or private reference photos. It really is more of a far away view from the ground, but that's alright with me.

This needs a title, ideas anyone?

Painted Violin Project - Progress Photos 2

Top: Screwing into place the cool old metal link belt found at a thrift shop three years ago. It now has a home.

Bed Pieces Project - Installation! (or - "The End.")

YIPEE! The project has been installed! Andy & Zach were awesome, because without them, the project would not be finished. I know a little more about wood work because of this project, but there was no way that I could install the art work on my own. The large pieces are about 15 lbs for one, and 30 lbs for the larger. The small pieces I can handle, but that big, bulky one! THANKS, guys!

We went to the home and hung them. I don't think she was expecting that - but loved that we were doing it. Needless to say, this was a special case, because installations are not the work I want. Her home looks WONDERFUL with the arrangement. Exciting! Sort of sad, too. Sad, you might ask? Sad, because the challenge was fun!

On to the next challenges: a figure portrait commissioned (can't share, it's a Christmas gift); put together an artists' package; become active in a business group (thanks, Jewel!).

Bed Pieces Project 6

Andy did a little wood work on the bed pieces yesterday. What a difference! The small pieces needed some repairs, and luckily are already "framed." The big pieces needed a "frame," and Andy is the man!

The footer, as I call it, did not have two frame sides. Andy had saved the bed rails, so he cut them down and added them to the sides. The bed rails are great save, because it means all of the wood is aged the same. I had not noticed the challenge, and since I don't know how to wood work, THANKS, ANDY!

The reason why I call it the "Bed Pieces Project" is because the wood originally made a bed. The bed was handed down to my client from her great grandfather. The pieces of this bed have made it to present day within the same family, but have not been used as a bed in decades. She wants to pass down the bed to her children, but as art pieces. One of her friends suggested me. Yippee!!!!

Shown are three of four completed, and Andy doing wood work. The large piece is shown without the side framing pieces. All pieces will be re-stained and finished before delivery. All will be photo'ed and blogged for us. =)

Bed Pieces Project 5

Seems like all I've posted is about the violin...but I did work on the Bed Pieces Project this past loooong weekend. This weekend, I'll get pictures up of the three of four that are finished.

Andy got home from his Bike Trip and really loved the pieces I finished. That usually means that the client will love them, too, and so it is an excellent sign that I am almost finished. This is fun, but it's been a challenge and learning experience.

It's actually ANDY's turn to work on them this weekend! Andy is a whiz at wood working. The pieces do need some repairs, cuts, and other stuff he would have to teach me and/or do for me. I don't know who has the more difficult part, the artist painting or the wood expert repairing. That will be a blog post (or two, or three, considering how I write) for the weekend, especially if we get rained out of the beach.

I'll stop the words, & let you see a picture. Mind that when the final touches are done (tape removal, wood work, etc.), those photos will be posted, too.
