New Beginnings - January's Painting

New Beginnings ©2011 by Angeline Marie using encaustic techniques, 12 x 12 inches - $230

In December, the most mentioned theme for January was “New Beginnings.” The first mention of the theme was by Bianca, the winner of the set of postcards with a to-be-created painting. This painting was created in January, 2011, and the title of New Beginnings fits very well.
There are many artistic adventures to share with you...and 2011 is full of new beginnings. This painting uses the experience of one adventure from this year already enjoyed: the encaustic workshop given by artist Kim Bernard.
For the last year, I have been self-teaching myself how to use encaustic paint and techniques by using books and Youtube videos. The workshop with Kim really filled in details missing such as how warm the wax should be before using a carving tool, how to embed objects, and what and how to fuse wax. The techniques used in creating New Beginnings were ones that I did not understand how to do until attending the workshop. This painting even takes a little of Sasha’s image idea of flowers!
New Beginnings...every day!
Now it's your turn - what new beginnings are you enjoying this year?

Smiles,
Angeline Marie of

PS: Did you know that beach sand is mostly silica, a type of quartz very much like glass? No wonder our feet burn walking on the sand on a hot sunny summer day! [Information learned from the oceanography class.]

A-M: The colors are terrific. Did you play with the colors on this one, or did you know in advance exactly what colors you intended to paint?

JJ:
The only color that was completely intentional was the red. The flowers were totally by accident, and then just followed instinct on the rest of the colors.

When I think too much on a painting, the painting gets ruined. This one likes being simple...but love how complicated the colors look.
