Mature Audiences Only Original Mixed Media Design

Mature Audiences Only, 8 x 8 inches, 3D collage on canvasboard,©2015 Angeline Marie
If you have an older independent wonderful loved one, you will be involved in doing stuff like home repairs. Wonderful Handy Andy was about to toss this blister package after a small house job that made Mama very very happy. The robots Mature Audiences Only were very very happy that I rescued them and brought them to life.

In high school, everyone is sex-crazed...at least at my Catholic high school we were, LOL. We spent quite a number of lunches twisting every phrase into double-meanings and inventing insults. Oh, how we laughed!

There are quite a number of phrases cut from different packages and magazines. Some you can only see if you meet Mature Audiences Only in person. We can definitely work on how to make that happen!

I am from Miami! Original collage art

I am from Miami! 8 x 10 inches on canvas, collage, 2014, $100
I spent most of Saturday working on my Abstraction writing homework and Sunday finally cleaning the shed with Andy.

This piece I am from Miami! is because it was until about my late teens that I realized that I couldn't truly say I am Cuban. I can say I am Cuban-American, which is an entirely differentl thing. Mi Mama would say to me "but you didn't come from Cuba, you were born here in Miami" when I would say "when we arrived from Cuba."

To the bottom left is the style of television we had. One of the rooms had a similar wallpaper in it. The framed photo just shows 4th of July fireworks at the Biltmore Hotel, not because we watched them there but for us celebrating Independence Day in general. There is an old fashioned cordless phone that leads you to the cafecito on the table covered with one of our favorite family tablecloths we used at home and then the beach. The scene is from the early to mid 1980s.

There are four days left of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge...and I am very happy it is over soon...lol.

Horizon Line Palm Trees Abstract Artwork

Horizon Line Palm Trees, 8 x 8 inches,  mixed media on canvasboard, 2015, $100
Day 19....
I see something new every time I look at this artwork: a new color, a shine, something that happened accidentally. This was supposed to be a painting...but it was so flat and uninteresting that I dug into my collage stash. I quite like the results...even if just a tad darker mood thank I had intended. It was always intended to be abstract.

I hope you like Horizon Line Palm Trees. What do you see in it?

Dragon Over Italy

The BORING "Italian" scene I painted in 2005 that had a few lessons learned BUT
I totally HATED. It's been in my studio for 10 years...enough time to confirm I hated it. LOL
Dragon Over Italy, 16 x 20 inches, mixed media on canvas, 2015, $500

Recently, Andy received some sad news from his hometown in the cold white north. I bring this up because I try to live with few regrets...and try to LIVE. We, Andy & I, prefer to be out and about and DOING things than sitting at home watching too much TV and whining that "there is nothing to do."

The top painting is one I "regretted" making just because it is so gosh darn BORING. I decided it needed a redo. A collage dragon, a Polaroid photo that doesn't work because it is so old (that is a story for another blog post, lol), and some playful stencil work on deli paper made this so much better to me. I like it.

Dragon Over Italy is a title of puns. The dragon is "taking over Italy," and is "over" Italy as being the main idea in this painting. My friend Karla had a small part in making this dragon come alive (thanks, Karla!).

Go out and live. Regret something? Do something to "nullify" it. Make a bucket list. Go do those things. My bucket list includes getting through this month. LOL Day 16 of 30 DONE!
Ok...back into my studio! Yikes! I need more to show you! LOL

Horus Eye Collage

Horus Eye, 8 x 8 inches, collage on canvasboard, $100

It was also the year mi Mama and I visited Egypt. Oh what a wonderful experience!!! We loved it!

Our only truly bad moment in Egypt was at the airport about to leave: there was only one flight ticket for four of us. With three people with very similar names, I was the only one who had a ticket. LOL I stayed with Mama, just as Carmen stayed with hers. Our trip was magically extended as Allah willing we visited Alexandria with the crazy fun taxi driver who teased us by mimicking our cries of mira! mira! mira! (look! look! look!).

This little art piece is inspired by Egypt. Ancient Egypt has beautiful art, colors, and symbols. The Valley of the Kings made a huge impression on me: the caves full of scrumptious colors. It's a wonder to look up into the sky, under an arch that's stood for a couple of thousand years and see paint still adhering to the underside of the arch. Yeah. I still dream of that trip!

Where have you traveled that made a huge impression on you?

2014 - Peaceful Adios!

What a year you have been, 2014.

I am grateful to see you peacefully leave my life.

From my Mama being sick, to being push-pulled at my day job, to not seeing and being with Husband Andy for what seemed like three months, to feeling like I was in a gray ugly fog that left me inside the pages of my sketchbooks, to Cuba and USA relations changing drastically at about noon on December 17th, to different dreams of future...to actually having 24 paintings of at least 8 x 8 inches completed, to having a newly organized art studio, to having Andy and Mama and my loved ones healthy and happy, to trying new things and having new adventures, to love just being Home, to things at day job being sorted out, to taking new adventures in 2015....

2014, Peaceful Adios!

Sixteen of the approximately 25 paintings and mixed media designs completed
in 2014 by me, Angeline-Marie. 2014 began with the plan of one painting
a week for a total of 52...but God laughs at our plans...LOL.

How was your 2014? Hope it was a good one!

Painting Collage of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

There are SO MANY lessons learned during this month's challenge, both good and bad.

Today I listened to Artists Helping Artists' Leslie Saeta's podcast and cried. I am NOT easy to make cry. One artist's letter about how she had more bad experiences than good did it. NOT that it happened to me - just that I totally understand how she feels. Oh, my long time online artist friend Cindy Michaud's email was read "on the air," too!

Today is really the last day of the challenge to me. The collage is what makes the challenge, using PicMonkey.com. It was super easy to do...between my iPhone, Box.com, and my MacBook. Time consuming, imperfect, but good enough to give us a gist of just how much art work was created.

Today am off to celebrate with a friend Marty Hill and Husband Andy at our favorite Italian restaurant Mamma Mia's 2.

Hope you are celebrating life, too.

Oh - and if you like any of these, they are for sale. LOL

If you would like to see more paintings in person, please visit one of my favorite restaurants, Chefs on the Run Assorted Cuisine.

New Beginnings - January's Painting

New Beginnings ©2011 by Angeline Marie using encaustic techniques, 12 x 12 inches - $230

In December, the most mentioned theme for January was “New Beginnings.” The first mention of the theme was by Bianca, the winner of the set of postcards with a to-be-created painting. This painting was created in January, 2011, and the title of New Beginnings fits very well.
There are many artistic adventures to share with you...and 2011 is full of new beginnings. This painting uses the experience of one adventure from this year already enjoyed: the encaustic workshop given by artist Kim Bernard.
For the last year, I have been self-teaching myself how to use encaustic paint and techniques by using books and Youtube videos. The workshop with Kim really filled in details missing such as how warm the wax should be before using a carving tool, how to embed objects, and what and how to fuse wax. The techniques used in creating New Beginnings were ones that I did not understand how to do until attending the workshop. This painting even takes a little of Sasha’s image idea of flowers!
New Beginnings...every day!
Now it's your turn - what new beginnings are you enjoying this year?

PS: Did you know that beach sand is mostly silica, a type of quartz very much like glass? No wonder our feet burn walking on the sand on a hot sunny summer day! [Information learned from the oceanography class.]

Angeline Marie using Encaustic Techniques

This video is just to give you a little idea of how I use beeswax. The more technical term for beeswax painting is "encaustics." There are lots of ways and ideas of how to use encaustics.

Some of my completed encaustic paintings are inspired by the book Encaustic Workshop. There are great techniques, ideas, and processes in this book I have yet to try.

For more information about my encaustic art, please visit my webpage
Angeline Marie's Fine Art / Encaustic. There you will find other examples of encaustic art as well as the blog posts about each completed piece.

Thanks for enjoying the video. If you have further questions and/or comments, please feel free to leave a comment on this blog.

Heart on Sleeve, 2010

"Heart on Sleeve," 24 x 20 inches, mixed media on canvas, 2010, $455

Inspired by a box of Valentine's chocolates someone brought to the studio once the candy was shared.

The photo is limited, but when you are up close to the painting, different things show through the paint. All the collage items have to do with a single gal struggling with her life not happening the way she  thought. Dragon, watch, fitness, energy, meditation, all types of ideas show when you look carefully at the actual painting.

I was that single gal before Andy came sneaking into my life. Andy and I were friends for over a year, each with different people. The first time we met, I thought "Wow! He's cute! Yeah, well, he's in a totally different life stage than me, so forget it." Well, although there is an age difference, Andy and I still work very well together. So well, that when I mentioned the age difference during my cousin's inquisition (joke), she said that she always knew that I would be with an older man! Andy and I are going on three years...and he's stuck with me (cue the old Huey Lewis song from the 1980s).

Simon at Window (with Blinds)

Simon at the Window (with Blinds), 2010, 11 x 14 inches, mixed media on canvas, $125.

This little piece started out as a palette (as usual) and ended up a fun mixed media piece. Paper, paint, cut outs from my job's roll of paper and my sketchpad all are on this piece.

Simon (the cat) is one of my favorite characters to catch on paper. He runs around our home as if his tail was on fire, or you can find him on the sofa we call "mini-red" catching a nap. Simon has to be in the same room as either of his humans, Andy or me. He will whine until we are "with him." This sketch catches him in just that moment: has to be with us but not on us. One of his favorite places, like most cats, is in the sun, hence the blinds and the light.

Do you have a cat? It is alright to be a dog person, but there has to be at least one cool cat (no puns intended) that you have met! Does this cat have a favorite place, and if so, what is it?

Encaustic Workshop! Photos from today!

What a great time we had learning encaustic techniques from Canadian artist Heather Hennick! Thank you to Libby, Bonnie, Cole, Mila, Michelle, and Mary for making a great afternoon. It was 4pm before we knew it and we all still wanted to play.

Some of us wanted to continue doing transfers, others collage, and some just played with the wax. I fell into the last category, and was greatly happy with the results. This is definitely a medium with which I am going to continue to use.

Here are some things we learned about working with beeswax:

1. Smoothing wax is much more challenging than we thought.
2. Have a steady hand is not always a good thing.
3. Wax is playful, colorful, and liquid.
4. The iron also turns into a small hot plate.
5. It smells so good!
6. Transfers are a cinch.
7. Collages are fun, easy, and with magnificent results.

The day's class ended with "let's keep in touch," and "thanks for a great class!" Me, well, I want to keep doing this, but I'm going to listen to Main Highway tonight.

Got a comment about one of my blog posts? Feel free to post one, even if anonymously! I have fun reading your comments, & will respond.

Smiles!
