Sketchbook Project - Art on Tour!

Artist sketchbooks are touring the USA! Over 22,000 sketchbooks were submitted to the ArtHouse Coop,  including sketchbooks from South Florida. Upon conclusion of the tour, the sketchbooks become part of the ArtHouse Coop library. If you are adventuring close to these sketchbook stops, consider thumbing through some art!

Basil - for the ArtHouse Project

"Basil," acrylics & leaf on canvas, 4 x 4 inches, 2010

This was the noun from the ArtHouse Coop Canvas Project with the obvious interpretation. "Basil" is recognizable a frequently used spice, but it also means "royal" and is the name of boy. 

I remember in Catholic school learning that Jesus was draped in purple clothing while he was being mocked because the color symbolized royalty. The background is purple because of one of the meanings of "basil." 

A neighbor unwittingly provided the leaf that makes this a mixed media art work. 

That concludes the project, for me. Now, to snail mail off to them!

"Often," 2nd Canvas for the ArtHouse Coop Canvas Project

Often - 2010 - mixed media on canvas - 4 x 4 inches

This is the second of the three canvases for the ArtHouse Coop. This piece is "Often," the adverb I mentioned in my "Stoccata" post.

I often dream of being at the beach. The song "Some Beach" by Blake Shelton often goes through my head when silly, annoying things happen to me. The beach is one of my top three favorite places. I am totally myself when I am at the beach: the heat, sand, cool water, salt, air...all contribute to my feeling of health and home. When the oil gets here from the Gulf of Mexico spill, I will be more saddened about the entire ordeal. In the meantime, Andy and I get to Miami's beaches as often as we can this summer.

"Often" has beach sand, foam and construction paper, and acrylic paints. The calendar of the week days is superimposed over our umbrella and the ocean we love. The beaches in Miami usually have a slope going towards the water, hence the lack of true shore line in "Often."

Definition: of·ten - [aw-fuhn, of-uhn; awf-tuhn] –adverb 1. many times; frequently: He visits his parents as often as he can. 2. in many cases. –adjective.

Stoccata #11 of Art Inspired by the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

The ArtHouse Coop has been around for at least a few years, and I always intended to sign up and participate in some of the projects. That was my problem: intention but not action. There are always things to do such as my self-made projects, forgetting to log in to see the due dates, etc. Too many times, the project was already closed by the time I remembered. Not this time!

This is the first of three canvases, each is 4 x 4 inches. For the Canvas Project, each artist gets three canvases and three randomly generated words. The idea is to paint your interpretation of each word on each canvas. One of my newly learned words is "stoccata."

Stoccata was the last word I interpreted on canvas. When you see the next two words, you will wonder why it was difficult for me because I received two nouns and one adverb. I had the idea for the adverb first!

"Stoccata" has paper, ink, acrylic paint, white glue, and aluminum tape. The companies responsible for the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has the world at dagger point...while the environment continues to die as a consequence. I thought it appropriate to make this art part of my Gulf of Mexico oil spill series.

Definition: stoc·ca·do [stuh-kah-doh] - noun, plural -dos. Archaic. a thrust with a rapier or other pointed weapon. Also, stoc·ca·ta [stuh-kah-tuh] Origin: 1575–85; alter. of It stoccata, equiv. to stocc - swordpoint, dagger, as in renegado.
