Sketchbook Project - Art on Tour!

The Sketchbook Project: 2011

Artist sketchbooks are touring the USA! Over 22,000 sketchbooks were submitted to the ArtHouse Coop,  including sketchbooks from South Florida. Upon conclusion of the tour, the sketchbooks become part of the ArtHouse Coop library. If you are adventuring close to these sketchbook stops, consider thumbing through some art!

Tour itinerary includes the following cities and dates. Updates to the itinerary can be found at ArtHouse Coop.

When the sketchbooks are digitized by the ArtHouse Coop (made available for view on the internet), the links will be posted.

South Florida artists who participated with me are Rosie Brown, Nancy Martini, Elizabet Chacon, and Sheri Friedman. Click our names to visit our links:

Chicago Museum is Home for a Month

Museum is Home for a Month for Chicago Woman, by Shelby Lin Erdman, CNN

October 25, 2010 1:42 a.m. EDT

STORY HIGHLIGHTS
- Kate McGroarty won a promotion contest to spend a month in a museum

- She's in her second week at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry

- McGroarty has developed a fan following on Twitter and among visitors to the museum

- "I've always loved this museum, and I've always loved adventure," she says.

I saw the article in CNN and had to re-post it! Can you imagine staying a museum for a month?! Where was I when the contest was announced!?

One of my favorite books of all times, From the Mixed-up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler had a brother and sister duo solving a mystery at a museum. So what if it is a 3rd grade level book - if you are an adult who missed the 1980s, go find this book and read it. A true adventure in a museum...with art lessons included.

I wonder if Ms. McGroarty has any mysteries to solve?!

What museum would you want to stay in for a month? What would you do first there? What would you do last? Would you want a mystery to solve?

PS: Happy Halloween!

Artists Read, Too

This is a very quick list of some things I read that influence me. They are in no real order, and they are an incomplete list. I love to read all kinds of books, magazines and listen to podcasts. If at all possible, a photo and link to the book and/or magazine is shown at the end of this post. Here is the quick list:

1. Baruj Salinas La Mirada del Que Mira, ©2007
Written in English and Spanish, this book is gorgeous! The book has work by artist Baruj Salinas from the 1980s through 2006. Looking through this book reminds me of the lessons he imparts and how much I want to grow up to be just like him as an artist. I was fortunate to obtain this book...!

2. Dietmar Elger Abstract Art ©2008
How I am enjoying the books by publishing company Taschen! The books are well within most people's price range, with gorgeous pages of art in color and not-too-lofty writing. This book explains in simple terms most kinds of abstractions found it art. What a great book to use for projects! What a great book just to learn!

3. Alyson B. Stanfield I'd Rather Be in the Studio ©2008
My favorite reference book for how to do just about anything art business related. Her writing style is easy to follow as well as encouraging. Having this book, and her website ArtBizCoach.com, is like having a best friend who is interested in the same thing: share my art with the world. She is currently updating the book.

Currently out of print, and challenging to find, this is a loose autobiography by Cuban artist Raul Martinez. Being a very slow reader of Spanish, my mother kindly highlighted the parts of this book that interest us. This book is also disturbing in that did he really want to be known like that? The book was published in 2007, about 12 years after his death. Perhaps it was never intended for publication? Another mystery about the artist that will not be solved by me!
Wondering why an exercise magazine makes an appearance? Artists, just like everyone else, need energy to be creative. My body demands endorphins: when forced without, cramps, sleepless nights, and aches begin! The models are not too perky, the articles are fun to read, and there is a little bit of fashion.

I have been reading this magazine since I was a child! Stories galore! Jokes! There is something for everyone in this magazine, including some amazing photos.

Discovered this magazine during the workshop by Julie T. Chapman in 2008. It is not a "how-to-paint" magazine like so many others, but more like a "how-to be in the art business."

These are just a few of the things around the house, in my gym bag, and by the bed that I grab to read.

What do you read? What book has influenced you?

Special call to my art friends: Would you be interested in participating in an art marketing salon? It would be about 12 weeks long, less than two hour meetings every other week. If you would like more information, please email me or leave a comment on this blog. Thanks!

Want to Give an Artist a Gift of Classes?

Do free classes work for you? How about low cost? Thanks to the internet and local libraries, learning anything is within reach of a computer. This is my list of what I use when wanting to learn something new in painting, drawing, etc. These also help when I get "stuck," too.

1. Subscription to Artist Network.tv.
For a fee, a how-to video of your choice streams to your computer. Sometimes, a free video is offered over a weekend. Video “rentals” are from a day to over six months, with unlimited views.

2. Books
Yes, old-fashioned, made of paper, glue, and sometimes cardboard BOOKS. Check to see if your library’s catalog is available online, and explore what you can check out (all puns intended). How to sketch, paint, draw, decorate, fix a car (ok, I am digressing) is all available through books, no rewinding required.

Another reason I love Utrecht is their online “school.” Free write ups, sometimes with videos, on how to use their art materials.

4. Youtube.com, eHow.com, and TVLesson.com.
I have videos posted on all three sites, and use them to find tips and tricks.

5. Art stores
Most art stores have a bulletin board where artists post their class information. Some art stores have classes during store hours.

6. Art clubs
Sometimes these clubs know of artists who give classes or even host classes.

7. Local community college
Non-credit courses can be a great way of trying something new.

8. Local park or garden
In Miami, the Fairchild Tropical Gardens has a list of art classes. Check your local area parks and/or gardens for their list.

9. Ask an artist whose work you admire.
It is important to like the work the artist makes. Make sure the work has elements that you know will challenge you. Ask, ask, ASK. You might get an artist to work with you, and you only!

10. If you are interested more ideas, here is a past blog post: Drawing Materials for Anyone. This topic is also a mini-series for me, so watch for more as the holiday season approaches.

Have an idea that is not on this list? Share, please!

World Alzheimer's Day - TODAY! Please help...

Please help by signing an online petition to make Alzheimer's Disease a priority. Tuesday, September 21, 2010 is World Alzheimer's Day.

For those of you watching a loved one's mental health slowly decline, I feel for your pain! My family experienced Alzheimer's effects with my father. For a good book about what it is like, check out The Worst Day of My Life, So Far.This was a book I could not finish reading....

I am not asking for money donations, although that would be great (to the Alzheimer's Association). Just your signature on an online petition would be greatly appreciated.

The link that follows will take you to a site to sign a petition to make Alzheimer's a national priority giving more money for spending. The petition will be presented to the government on September 21 World Alzheimer's day.
http://www.alz.org/petition

It takes less than a minute or two to sign.

If you are wondering if signing the petition places you on an email list, it does. If you do not wish to receive Alzheimer's related email, follow the directions I give here (this works for most email lists):

1. Scroll to the end of the email and find a sentence with the word "UNSUBSCRIBE." Sometimes it is a word by itself.
2. Click on that word, follow the directions given in the windows that pop open.
3. Your email address will be deleted from that list.

THANK YOU in advance for signing the petition. If you run in any challenges getting yourself removed from the email list, please let me know so that I may help you.

Who Me? - Dry Paint from 2005

Who Me? - 2005 - acrylics on paper - ~13 x 24 in.
In 2005, there were many changes occuring in my life as an artist: new living place, new painting mentor, new friendships....It was a tough but very good year in which this little raccoon was painted. I needed a friendly face at my new place, and he was it!

I adore reading. One of my favorite books of all times is an ancient one titled Frosty: A Raccoon To Remember.... I bought it at the bookstore in Loehman's Plaza, way before Aventura Mall became a Miami destination for shopping. That Frosty got into so many funny adventures with toilets, cars, and cigarettes, that I giggled my way through the story. When I saw the photo of this raccoon, I had to paint it. I still have this paperback some where in my stash of books, too.

Did I get the spirit of mischevious Frosty? What do you think about raccoons? Are they just pests, or do you actually like them like I do?

Smiles,
