Studio Tip Try Out - Fixing Brushes Part 2 of 2

This is part 2 of fixing splayed brushes. Most turned out alright...the truly bad brushes reverted back to their bad ways. Ah well. At least I tried. 

I did find a trick to fixing synthetic bristle brushes on YouTube: dip in hot hot water. I have a mix of brush types, so I might use that trick to try to fix my other brushes. 

Just a reminder, this trick is from my favorite podcast (internet radio show) since Leslie Saeta began it is Artists Helping Artists. Leslie reviewed this trick and tip on one of her October, 2014 shows.

Studio Tip Try Out - Fixing Brushes Part 1 of 2

My favorite podcast (internet radio show) since Leslie Saeta began it is Artists Helping Artists. 

Leslie's shows are like listening to best friends every week. She is always looking for topics, artists to interview, etc. Her shows make me feel much less lonely as an artist. 

Some of her shows are about studio tips and tricks. This is a short video of my trying one of her tips. I did this back in October, 2014 when I had only about 15-30 minutes of art time a day (if I even had the energy, lol). My goal was to be in my art studio doing something, anything that made me feel like I was going forward. I spent time cleaning, purging, prepping surfaces, trying techniques, and listening to Leslie and her guest artist.

How Simon Cat Helps in My Art Studio

To keep Simon safer, he gets his own water dish. 

Right behind my feet while I'm at my easel. 

Abyssinian cats are not supposed to be lap cats...but Simon is when HE wants!

Simon is the first cat I've ever had as a best friend and spoiled in our own home. I used to borrow my friend Talon's cat, Himher. That black and white cat was so patient and sweet. Another cat I used to borrow was Cinnamon, who belonged to Marie. That calico was shy, but used to sleep on my pillow during the few nights I would sleep over her place.  

Simon loves to explore my art studio. He pounces on ribbons, jumps onto the window sills, paws the backs of my legs until I sit down and give him a rub down. He sits in is cubby and watches. He falls asleep on my rugs. 

I did have a fighting fish for a while...goldfish are nasty...had a bird for a few weeks and a toy poodle for a few weeks...all those are stories, lol. Mi Mama forbade me from having any real pets. I had stuffed animals that I had to fight to keep. Now, I have Simon, thanks to Wonderful Andy. 

Andy says the only reason we will ever get another cat is because I enjoy Simon so very much. As I write this post, Simon is on the patio chair next to me, curled up with eyes half open. As long as Simon happily lives, he will be spoiled and his antics enjoyed. Unless, of course, he decides to wake us up at 5:30 am on a weekend, meowing for water!

As for dogs, we do like them, but we do not have the lifestyle to support a dog. We have a next door neighbor with three dogs who get very little attention from their humans. We don't want to be like them! We feel sorry for the dogs, but we cannot help. We can support and enjoy and spoil a cat.

These are Not My Clay Pots...LOL.

Back in the 1980s, mi Papa y Mama found a ceramics class at Ojus Park on Saturday mornings that wanted children. 

I LOVED IT! Pick a mold, get the piece to work the next Saturday, etch my name on the bottom, clean, paint, have it fired, etc. I remember the instructor's face...she loved my work because I was one of the neatest painters and chose colors well. I even took the adult advanced class after the kids' class and still loved it. Some family members still have a piece I made...or sadly I took them back when they passed (Abuela y Papa). 

When I turned 13, I was kicked out of the ceramics classes. I was too old for the kids' classes and too young for the adult classes. When I turned 18, I was too busy with college classes and helping with Papa to return to Ojus Park no matter how much I wanted. I had heard about throwing clay on a wheel well before the famous movie Ghost, but there was no where to learn and no time.

So, guess what?! It's NEVER a good time. It's NEVER a good place. Wonderful Andy said as long as I make it to his birthday party, I can attend the throwing clay class at Anhinga Clay Studios.  Guess what I'm doing Saturday nights for a bit? LOL 

First class already passed. The only demand I am making on myself is to enjoy the learning process. I already like the feel of clay on my hands, lol. My stuff is total junk, but I am learning quite a lot.

Why My Studio Stays Empty Sometimes

My allergies sometimes just kick my ass (yes, I just cursed, please get over it!). Not being able to breathe properly sucks energy. It feels like a constant fight, regardless of what drugs (OTC, prescribed, etc.) I take. I hate taking drugs (medicines)....

So this night, I let my low energy win. Not totally...I added to my "low energy, little time" list of projects. All while enjoying Andy's sucky chair (sit in it and you get sucked into it) while he went out. 

All day, I fought for breath. I hate mouth breathing, but that is what I am forced to do during my worked out, my occupational bondage task list, driving home, etc. I even planned out a few more paintings in my sketchbook! I just have almost nothing left. Before I mess something up, best leave it alone. 

Since this night, I've been to a new-to-me doctor who prescribed different medications that should last me two weeks. Yeah, more meds...but a hopeful plan after this round of meds. 

At least I can breathe!!! I can SMELL and TASTE! SLEEP! Oh...the allergies are still with me...but now I have a confirmed case of chronic sinusitis which is BEYOND allergic rhinitis.  

All the while, I KNOW I AM LUCKY. I feel lousy, but there are worse things to experience. I do remember this as I can't get a breath through my nose.

Quiet...Too Quiet Muse....

For some reason, my sketchbook is quiet along with my muse. 

So for now...making some backgrounds for when both begin to clamor for studio time and textured surfaces.
