Give Me a 4B Pencil and a Blank Page Book

My studio for the last couple of months consists of a 4B pencil and a sketchbook.

Kathy asked that since I get to work in a new art studio, if more art will be shared on Facebook, etc. Oh...am working on a few pieces now. Never stopped creating art over the last months.

These are some whimsical, silly sketches from October and November. They might not be considered "high brow art," or even good. They give ideas for future pieces of art. They record what may have happened during a day or two in my life. Some have haikus (thanks, Cynthia), some have random words heard. Create art every day is my mantra since returning from Paris, without self-judgements.

One thing I truly miss is adding color. Lucky me, at least I have time to make the lines!!! Yay!

The Artist in the Office

My day job is at a power plant. It consists of coordinating two programs, paperwork, making and keeping friends, and all the normal things that any office job requires. Sometimes I also need to wear safety shoes, a hardhat, gloves, ear plugs, and safety glasses. Occasionally, my creative skills can be used to help different departments, including my own.

Power plants are construction sites: there is something happening some where on site at all times of the day or night. It could be something simple like checking valves, or more complicated like on what I stumbled upon the other night. For the current outage (or off-line concentrated maintenance), I am working peak shift. Almost alone in my office and needing some fresh air, I took a quick loop around the building and stopped in awe.

No camera, just pencil, paper, bad lighting, and my eyes. Spent a few minutes enjoying the lines and shadows of this "LP Rotor." The first sketch was a warm up in which I completely ruined the size. The second and last sketch captured the size better because the dumpster was now in proportion. The man you see in the first sketch was added later.

If the choice was mine, the office phone would be forwarded to my cell phone and perhaps could have spent more time with this rotor. However, I like my day job most times, and need to keep it, so I returned to my office with these now treasured sketches.
It's not every day that there is a HUGE rotor sitting outside for an artist to sketch! When I reported to work the next day, it was already gone and in the process of being installed in an area I do not explore. Lucky me!

Latest Sketches...but by Request Only

It's been a while since I have posted some of the work art done recently. I do have at least one finished painting to share. Then, I start to think of most of what I have done lately.

Lately, I want to draw figures. We have an incredible model at Ismael's studio. She knows how to hold a pose, has a beautiful and exotic face, and she's quite attractive body-wise. She's fun to draw, especially when Ismael directs. The poses are of her leaning back with her legs crossed, her standing with one foot on a short stool, etc. There is little "gross" or "disagreeable" about the poses.

I would love to post them at work and on my website, but the drawings are nudes. Sadly, no matter how tasteful, the drawings might get the attention they do not deserve, so I won't post most of them.

Like I've said, I like my job because it keeps me in paint. With that said, look out for a few pictures (no, they are safe for viewing, or at least what I will post) or drop me an email if you would like to see a sample.

DRAWING MATERIALS - BASICS

Sometimes, someone asks me what supplies should they get for an aspiring artist. Well, here goes!

Office Depot, Staples, Office Max have basic supplies. Michael's also has some. I'm sure up north Hobby Lobby will have. Art sites such as www.jerrysartarama.com and www.utrecht.com have better loose supplies (meaning you can buy as many of one type of pencil your heart desires, etc.) that the office supply stores may not have.

The list:

- #4B pencils run about $1 each (don't waste time w/kits full of different pencil types),

- pack of "smudgers" (they look like sharpened lollipop sticks for blending the pencil ($3/pack),

- a sketch pad that has a book binding not spiral (Borders, Barnes & Noble, look in discount sections, $10-20) about 8x11 size are nice b/c pages stay in,

- pencil sharpener (Dollar Tree!), get a few because somehow they always get lost & scattered,

- small pencil pouch to carry pencils, etc.,

- gray eraser that you have to pull & stretch (Michael's) & perhaps one pink eraser.

I think that's it. It'll run you about $30 for all - paper being most expensive @ ~$8/pad if you don't want the book bound type.

Although I didn't have a chance to watch any of the videos, seems like there are some high quality lessons!

Monday's studio session

WOW! It has been way too long since drawing figures from real life! Ismael set us up with a model (who is very pretty) who has the patience of a saint. She held her poses for 20 minutes at a time and barely fidgeted.

Working from her poses, we began the session with a 20 minute "draw however you want." The next sessions were using what I call a shape/block/shade technique. Everything was done in pencil.

1. Draw lines where you see the shoulder line, hip line, etc.

2. Block off the torso, hips, etc.

3. Joints are usually circles or ellipses.

4. Fill shading.

It was a LOT of fun. I'm looking forward to having more model time at Ismael's sessions!

If you're wondering if anything is worth showing, of course everything is! Just remember that these are sketches and loose drawings - not completed works of art. =)
