This painting was painted on location at the Deering Estate during the weekend of January 11-12, 2014. What a great way to begin the year: with hours of painting with other artists! Watch for more about the event coming soon on my blog.

Greatest Hit Favorite Paintings of 2010

To all those who encourage, are interested, and love art: THANK YOU for a wonderful 2010 and may we all enjoy a blessed, safe, FUN, and healthy 2011! This is a quick review of my favorite paintings from this year...hope you enjoy them, too. This one gives me bragging rights: other than the mosaic by another artist that was beautiful and unfinished, this was the most quirky painting entered in the juried exhibit. Honorable mention!

This was done during one of the Bakehouse figure drawing sessions. I love the curves of the figure and how the ink flowed from the brush.

The Bakehouse had a juried exhibit with the theme "SIN," and months before the deadline I decided to enter. That was a first time for me, planning out five paintings for an exhibit months ahead. Well, I entered five paintings, and not a single one was accepted. After seeing the show on YouTube, I decided it might be because I am too traditional. Still, I love this piece.

Andy and I enjoyed a motorcycle trip this past summer. It was the color, information, and reference photo overload for art junkies that he predicted for me. Even in late August, some leaves were already turning gold and red.

The most influential to me as an artist was the Deepwater Horizon event in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil spill is still affecting life in the waters, but the media circus has ended. Researchers have taken over the areas...and we have yet to learn the extent of damage. This painting is one of my favorites for it's pure accident, the fish I see, the water, the panic, and the need for survival.

Not My Wedding Flowers

"Not My Wedding Flowers," - 2010 - acrylics on canvas - 20 x 16 in.

Funny things happen during plein aire events: rain, clouds, gathering of artists inside rooms at the park. One of the park employees set a vase of flowers on someone's desk in the classroom where we artists had sheltered for the Sunday. There are usually weddings taking place at the Deering Estate, and these were leftover flowers from the prior night.

As usual, I have an "extra" piece of canvas covered with old, dried, random acrylic paint colors. The flowers were rioting their desire for being immortalized, and I was the only one who heard their cries. The gorgeous whites, fuschias, pinks, and greens, how could I resist?

They are not my wedding flowers...!

Deering Estate "Summer Fine Art Exhibit" by GroveHouse Artists

It was a fine summer evening at the Deering Estate last night while the GroveHouse Artists celebrated their opening reception to the "Summer Fine Art Exhibit." The cookies were freshly home baked, the grapes were sweet, and wine and sodas were poured. There was a great turn out of artists and art lovers enjoying the beautiful Carriage House and the art displayed.

If you chance to visit the Deering Estate before September 10, 2010, please visit the Carriage House. You will find some incredible art by Paul Saint Laurent, Rosie Brown, Terry Arroyo Mulrooney, and Debbie Cortese just to name a few. Here is where I brag: my Honorable Mention is also hanging in this exhibit!

The Winners Are...! Deering Estate's Affaire En Plein Aire Event Day 2

We had such a great time this weekend at the Deering Estate! The sun finally broke clouds at about 2 pm today, about an hour before judging. No matter what the weather, paint outs do happen!

What are "Plein Aire" Events?

Plein Aire is fancy for painting done out of doors. Any type of paint will do: watercolor, oil, acrylics, tempera, etc. As long as the painting is done outside, the painting can be considered "en plein aire."

This event happens to be a contest, with rules for the participating artists. Here are a few:

1. All paintings or drawings must be created at the place, during the contest hours. Contest hours for this event are  Saturday from 9 am until 4 pm, Sunday from 9 am to noon.

2. All supports (another name for canvas, or paper, or wood, etc. used to hold the paint) must be blank at the start of the contest. This will be checked upon arrival. Textures are fine to have, as long as blank.

3. All paintings or drawings must stay overnight. This is to avoid work on the art during non-contest hours.

4. All work entered is juried. There are prizes, but the experience is enough for most artists. 

The best part of the contest is working with artists that are unfamiliar to me, seeing new perspectives, and being outside in the beautiful South Florida weather.

Announcement: Deering Estate's “Affair En Plein Aire”

The Deering Estate and GroveHouse Artists present "Affair En Plein Aire" on Saturday and Sunday, April 17 and 18th, 2010.

Who: Artists from South Florida, event given by Deering Estate & GroveHouse Artists.

When: April 17 & 18, Saturday 9 am to 4 pm, Sunday 9 am to 3:30 pm (Judging results given at approximately 3 pm)

What: Artists create work while at the Deering Estate during the contest hours. Completed art work is juried for a later exhibit.

Where: The Deering Estate, Miami, FL (follow link for directions)

How: Tour the Deering Estate grounds while visiting over a dozen artists painting scenes of the park. This is a rare time that many artists are in one location, creating art in different media!

If you are like me, there are many events happening that weekend such as the yearly Miami-Dade Baynanza Event. The Deering Estate participates in Baynanza every year. Last year, many of the volunteers visited artists after they helped clean up the park. It was great talking about the beautiful grounds with the volunteers while I painted. Come on out and support a great park and two events!

Top is the 3rd place winner, a 2009 version of the banyan tree. LOL. This one is about 8x10 inches, on wood plaque. Like many of art I create, the wood started out as a palette. The texture from the layers of paint are quite unique to each piece.
