Tomando Vuelo (Taking Flight) was one of my most realistic paintings done in 2004. I was on the verge of being bored with painting...it had been four years of struggling to find decent instructors, hours that fit around my day jobs, and explaining why I wanted to paint. Add a dash of tedious paintings by trying to be hyper-realistic, and well...

I paint for the joy and the challenge and the messes created. 

The whole time I felt I was juuuuuust about to take off and fly during those years. It took me a bit longer, but I finally did find a different painting instructor...but you'll have to wait for my next story. 

Is there something YOU want to do that seems tough to explain to other people? What if you did it anyway? 

Me? I figured I would open my art studio and show you what I've been doing outside my day jobs all this time. LOL

There are so many things that get in the way of what you really, really, really want to do, eh? 

Things like

- what HAS to be done

- chores

- running errands

- cats or dogs insisting on playing or loving or walking...

- just be with loved ones...

- health.

Health got to me this year. I could not breathe. So I kept it simple: paint sunflowers. This is one of the sunflowers I liked. 

Here comes Simon, again...to walk across my keyboard and insist on a loving rub down, so I best leave you for another day of the 30 Paintings in 30 Days....

HUGE GRACIAS to Andy, who named this via text message when I "showed" this to him the other night. 

Andy is one of my main sounding boards (ok, viewing) when it comes to deciding a piece is finished or not. It was almost finished when he texted me that description. My other viewing board happens to be my iPhone camera...amazing what doesn't look good in miniature, lol.

Carnival Abstract Palm Tree

This is one of the three paintings I finished THIS month! 

I am learning how to think abstractly, which is very different than thinking realistically or even impressionistically. 

This was a fun painting to make using sketches and crayons to plan it. It doesn't look very much like my crayon sketch, but that just means I have ideas for more paintings, LOL! 

This painting began with a simple shape drawing of a palm tree. From there, added and altered lines and then colors. The process is very different than I learned last year through the MoMA Collage class and cubism. 

Do you see the palm tree? If not, do you at least like this Carnival?

Three White Palm Trees

This painting has been on my review shelf for months...and months...and months. It began with textures. Turned into something that was painted over so long ago there is no memory and photograph of it. Then it got a few painting doodles on it in red. Then, then, then, then! 

Why bore you with the details, LOL? I finally called it Done this last week. Hope you like it...but if you don't, please let me know how to improve it? LOL

I'm so excited that in this past week Lisa Call's Abstraction class began finally! This is my fourth class with her...and my mind is already spinning the first week. Spinning in a good way. I might have some palm tree abstractions, way different than what I've done on my own, to share soon. No promises, though. If they aren't that great, they get painted over and never photographed. LOL

First Cubing Painting in Progress

Since the end of January, life is weird. I'm grateful the challenge is over, but sad that getting into my studio seems to be challenging. Oh, well. Good thing Husband Andy laughs when I set up an improvised still life in his room! Thank God he will be fine and experiencing a temporary hiccup! 

In the meantime, I am taking a class online by the New York City Modern Museum of Art about collage. Almost everything I've seen online about collage is "cutsy" or about scrapbooking. I want to learn about the artists who made collage popular in fine modern art. The first lesson is about cubism and how to "cube" a design after watching slide shows and videos about Picasso and Gris. Here is a progress photo on my first attempt "cubing" a design.

Better Memories through Sketchbooks

As if we needed an excuse to doodle and draw in sketchbooks...ran across why taking photos may actual ruin our memories, LOL. 

The articles linked below mention that most of our photos languish in digital files and are rarely viewed. We need to live in the moment to appreciate where we are visiting and what we are viewing. Put the camera down...and breathe...

Maybe pick up a pen?

Of course, I prefer to pick up my sketchbook. Picking through my past sketchbooks takes me back to that moment of drawing. I remember the details of sights, smells, feelings of the experience when I see particular pages. 

I wish I could admit to a lifelong habit of sketching, but it didn't really begin in earnest until I was in part of Original Impulses' Curious Paris back in September, 2011. 

My sketchbooks are always open for viewing...and I always have one with me. Just ask and I'll share, lol. Most private stuff is unreadable and/or in Spanish any way, lol.
What do you do to live in the moment? Do you bring out your camera (smartphone) or open to a sketchbook page?

Egyptian Wish for Day 2 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

In 1997, mi Mama and I visited Egypt. It is an amazingly beautiful country with generous and lovely people. I wish them peace, if only some day to visit them again.

Day 2 challenge met. I'm loving that my cards have the backgrounds already made. Am sitting here with Husband Andy, a gal nicknamed Little Giggles, and a boy nicknamed Poodle. We just enjoyed pizza and are sitting around the table laughing. I'm typing this up as Little Giggles says how rude I am to include them in this blog. Get over it, LOL.

2014 with a Audacious Bang

First, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! 2014 Welcome Soon! 

Ever feel nuts? Crazy? Loca or Loco? Loco for cocoa?

November and December were a rush of fun family visits and very little painting and creativity time. So...borrowing the word audacious from Lisa Sonora Beam and needing some of it in my life, here is quick list of what January looks like for que locura me!!!!

I am not not going to share my goals (yawn) or my new year's resolutions (more YAWN)...am just going to share in what I am participating in January, 2014, in my 40th year of life. Maybe you will decide to join me for one or two or three?

So, here's what I will be doing besides the usual:

Root: A 30 Day Journal Project | Lisa Sonora Beam: this is free. Lisa is sending 30 art journal (sketchbook) prompts to jog your creativity...as if getting her emails were insufficient inspiration.

N*Studio » Creative JumpStart 2014: I was super über fortunate to have stumbled into this event last year. For a mere $20, you get hours of videos and artful ideas that will keep you awake at night for want to try them all. I am ready for my daily art video inspiration fix....

Slices of Life by Leslie Saeta: Get Ready for the January 2014 "30 Paintings in 30 Days" Challenge!: Oh, boy. Yep. I did this in September with the theme of Husband Andy and I's recent trip to New Foundland, Canada via motorcycle. Main theme this time is just have fun...and palm trees of course. Stay tuned to my blog and website.

FitnessBlender.com: Life has forcefully handed me a new seemingly permanent size for jeans. Outside of getting sick for a couple of months in 2013, I've worked out at least three times a week since hitting an emotional rock bottom in 1997. This wife and husband team give free! challenging workout videos of all time lengths. The link sends you to their new program that starts on the 1st...and I want to try it. Am ok with the new jeans size as long as it's the permanent allergy meds are the culprit...because it can't be age, right? 

52 Paintings in 52 Weeks: This one is my idea. Am going to try to start/finish an full size (8 x 8 inches or larger) painting every week. After January, am sure there will be plenty of ideas jotted into my newly organized sketchbooks for me to create!

Winning Color for RV Sign

Just a reminder of the choices of what color to make the print...gold or blue.... 

The winner was RED! 

After staring at the letters, though, Husband Andy and I decided they needed some help. The letters were outlined with the same blue as the calm ocean water. 

The Hoffmanns will be enjoying their RV sign for many years to come. It will have many adventures as they travel North America! Hmmm...maybe they can snap photos of it as they travel and send them to me? LOL

RV Sign Wine and Palm Trees

Fins on the top or...

...fins to the bottom?

Blue writing or...

...gold writing?

Good friends Jim and Kathy recently began to travel the U.S.A. by RV. They sent Husband Andy and I a photo of a sign they saw posted outside another RV. Am so happy to work on their sign! It's a deceptively simple design that has had a few challenges but has been fun the entire way.  

Because it is a sign specifically for Jim and Kathy, there were a couple of decision points along the way. Where do you prefer the shark fins? What color writing do you prefer? All decisions were done via text messages and texted photos (yay for smartphones!). The latter decision is not shown here...because I made the executive artist decision on the color of the writing.

As Husband Andy pointed out to me, neither the blue writing nor the gold writing stands out very well against the background of the palm tree and calm ocean. That leaves just one color to use for the writing. Can you guess which color was used?

Next post will have the finished design...before it a heavy clear glossy coat is added to protect it from weather. Maybe you'd've guessed the color of the writing by then?

Cats Meow

Remember those little paintings all lined up in a grid row? The ones I use up extra paint instead of wasting paint? 

Cats Meow has paint, ink, and stencil experimentation. Simon, my studio sentinel, is often in my studio. Well, Simon insisted in appearing in this little card. Just like Simon insists I stop painting, sit on the floor, and give him love. Spoiled little cat...but I love him. 

If you are wondering about the missing white border on the left side...yep. Lesson learned from sheet one was to make sure I have blue tape along all sides of the paper before adding blue tape to the center. It will still frame out quite nicely. It's my attempt to include a mat with the little painting. 

If you love Cats Meow, it is available for $28 unframed and $48 framed. Shipping is included in both prices. There is only one of Cats Meow because there are too many textures in it to look good in reproductions of any kind.

Small Paintings to Finish Any Where

There were many lessons learned from the September 30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge that Artist Helping Artists' Leslie Saeta organized. 

I love saving paint from my projects. Acrylic paint saving is difficult and impractical most of the time. So...now the paint gets randomly applied, scribbled, dripped, smeared to a set of cards. These are a couple of photos of what I mean. 

A few of these cards get tucked inside my sketchbook for those times that I am not in my art studio but crave sooooo badly to be in my studio that a card and some random markers are as close as I'm going to get. 

I'm ready for the January painting challenge that Leslie says she's going to do. 

Let's get through the holidays, first, eh? LOL
