6+1 Reasons TO BE a Nude Model for Artists

1. Models are expected to hold poses any where from seconds to minutes at a time.
Models always get reasonable breaks, because no one can sit still that long. You are allowed to ask for a break when you need it, too.

2. You don't always have to be naked.
Artists need models in various stages of dress. Discuss with the artists for which you are posing. If you feel more comfortable wearing a swimsuit, etc., you probably will still be welcome to model. Outside of college classes, etc., being naked is not always required. You may simply wish to drape a cloth over certain parts, too.

3. It is what you do when naked that can be immoral.
Naked models are featured in paintings over 500 years old. The models are usually shown posing or doing simple non-sexual acts. Most artists will only study you with their eyes to measure lights, darks, proportions, lines, etc. We only want to draw you onto paper. Anything that makes you feel uncomfortable gives you the right to protest and/or simply leave. You really are expected to just pose as still as you can, in a simple pose or act. Most of these poses are NOT sexual!!! Most artists understand you are doing us a favor - and will treat you respectfully.

4. I am too ugly, fat, old, skinny, etc.!!! Why would ANY artist want to draw me!?
You are beautiful!!!! Artists see how the lights and shadows play on you. Artists see how the lines curve and connect. Artists see how your hand relates to your hip, to your thigh, to your feet. We are so grateful you are posing - and we only see how wondrous the human body truly is! Artists see a work of art: YOU. You are the only one with that particular collection of those lights, shadows, lines, etc. Thank you for sharing!

5. It would be embarrassing to model.
Artists can be embarrassed, too. The embarrassment lasts about two minutes. After that, artists don't see you any more. Artists see the lights, shadows, lines, proportions, etc. We become so involved in capturing those lines and shapes onto paper or canvas, we forget about your nakedness. You will probably feel that shift embarrassment to working mode. You may hear murmurs of appreciation. Again, artists respect, honor, and are grateful for your help in creating art.

6. Your reputation will remain intact.
We respect you. We are grateful to you. You can request to have us only draw your face from shoulders up or keep your face out of the drawing all together. If we see you outside of the studio setting, most of us will only mention that we met you at the studio if that even comes up in conversation. It all goes back to #3: Anything that makes you feel uncomfortable gives you the right to protest and/or simply leave. Photos are NOT part of the sessions, either!
One more thing: CHAPERONES are ALLOWED! Some models will bring a non-intrusive friend with them to the art studio. This person is allowed to sit quietly during the session and observe. The chaperone is NOT allowed to interfere with the work of the artists, make disrespectful comments, etc. Jealousy, relationship issues, etc. have no place in the art studio. Please bring someone reasonable and open-minded, because artists do not want involvement in drama.

Want to model for artists in a studio setting?
If you know someone of 21+ years old, send them to The Children's Gallery and Art Center. Model over 50 are welcome. Contact Carlos Franco @ 786-210-7517 or 305-224-9386. They are paying $30 for two hours.

About Saturday Night - Thank You!

Oh, what a night! Wow!!! THANK YOU to all who enjoyed my art this last Saturday night at the Children's Gallery and Art Center. If you still wish to visit, the gallery is open Monday through Saturday, from 9 am to 7 pm. Call before visiting at (305) 224.9386.

These are just a few photos from the evening, thanks to my wonderful and supportive fiance Andy. There are more photos at Andy's SmugMug. Jason Eldridge of Eldridge Studios also took photos, and those can be found on his blog post.

Yes, I am grateful. Yes, I am still excited. Funny thing happened, no one asked me if I had packed for Paris, yet!
My mother, enjoying some of my paintings.

Me.

Art lovers enjoying late.

Old and new friends.

Mary had a real ticket printed for the exhibit. It was hilarious!

Fridays in France: Have You Packed Yet?

Everything is crazy right now in my life.
Most is of good things...
just one lingering white elephant...
but life is good
with twists, turns, and changes
and lucky me
every one I love is alright or getting better.
Thank God.

Conversation pattern lately:
Someone: Have you packed yet for Paris?
Me: Not yet.
Someone: What do you mean? You leave soon!
Me: I am busy getting ready for my art exhibit.
Me: It is eight days before I leave for Paris! Am so excited because it is my first art exhibit!
Someone: Oh.
Me: You are welcome to attend! Come out for a nice Saturday night for art.
Someone: Oh. Well, sure. That is exciting, too (words dripping doubt). But you are going to pack soon for Paris?
Me: Yes, starting the day after the exhibit opening.

In the meantime, my friends Elcira and Janis have packed, re-packed, and weighed their luggage. Guess what I will be doing two days before I leave?

You are invited to share almost the same conversation with me tomorrow night. LOL

7 Things to Expect at an Art Exhibit Opening

A friend of mine recently asked me about what to expect at an art exhibit. Here are seven things to expect at an art exhibit opening, at least in my experiences:

1. Lots of art on display.

2. Light snacks and finger foods, perhaps wine, too.

3. People dressed neatly and casually.

4. The artist being friendly and open to questions.

5. Lots of different people from all walks of life.

6. Noise from conversations, sometimes background music...like party noise.

7. Best for last: a LOT of fun looking and talking about art.

Hope to see you at mine!

Oh, I have postcard announcements made for my art exhibit and would love to share them with you. If you send your U.S. Postal address to angeline@angelinemarie.net, I will send a postcard to you!

ONCE DROVE THROUGH FLORIDA
Art Exhibit at The Children’s Gallery and Art Center

Homestead, FL – August 20, 2011 – Angeline Marie presents an exhibition of paintings Once Drove Through Florida at the Children’s Gallery and Art Center in Homestead, Florida. The exhibition opens the evening of Saturday, August 20th and runs through September 13th, 2011.

The art exhibit Once Drove Through Florida by Angeline-Marie will feature encaustic and mixed media paintings showcasing her non-traditional interpretations and perceptions of Florida, palm trees, and the ocean from eye level to sky level. The textures, colors, and moods of Angeline-Marie’s paintings guide will take your mind on a drive through Florida on its back roads and sky ways.

Angeline Marie resides in Miami-Dade County where she began her artistic career in 1999. Her paintings feature landscapes, figures, and animals with many different materials such as acrylics, encaustics, and found objects. It was with Baruj Salinas and Ismael Gomez-Peralta that the artist developed her style of celebrating nature with a dark twist. She currently shares her unique art at www.angelinemarie.net.

About Angeline Marie Martinez
Angeline uses her existing environment combined with desire and passion to influence her landscapes. Her paintings nudge viewers into coming closer and conjuring visions of imagined places and pasts. Her landscapes are designed to “take you out of this world.”

Part 3: Behind the Scenes of an Art Exhibit

You are invited to see how my art exhibit looks from August 20th through September 13th, 2011. In the meantime, lots of little things that take time are part of the preparations. The Children's Gallery and Arts Center does a lot, too. This video series is just the little things that I do for the exhibit.

What behind the scenes things do you do for a big party, show, or book? For anything?

Part 2: Prepping for an Art Exhibit

Whew!!!! The gallery owners of Children's Gallery and Art Center chose paintings for the exhibit last weekend. It is scary to have someone review all of my paintings. Single paintings have received critiques, but not bodies of art work.

This video shows the aftermath of the review. The dining room continues to be an extended art studio. Next week's video will show some of the work involved in preparing the art work for exhibit.

I am sooo excited!!! Finally decided on a name for the exhibit with a little help from Bianca and Carmen. Thank you, ladies!!!! The name of the exhibit is Once Drove Through Florida.

What is something that you struggled to name? How did you find a name?

Art Review: Cuban Yank Tanks at the Children's Gallery

Untitled (Future Gang Car) ©Cesar Beltán, Acrylics on Canvas

This art exhibit is summed up by the artists' statement written by Cesar Beltrán displayed in the exhibit:

CYT - Cuban Yank Tanks is a collective art show that comprises the works of five emerging and mid-career artists about the existence of American cars in Cuba. Through the last fifty years, the classic American car has become not only a symbol of a vital and cultural resilience of the Cuban people against adversity but also perhaps the only and strongest reminder of the American presence in the daily life of the Island.

The artists represented in this art exhibit are Willy Argüelles, Cesar Beltrán, Julio Figueroa Beltran, Carlos Franco, and Yolanko (Yoyo) Argüelles. Each one interprets the American cars with one thing in common: emotion. Every piece in the exhibit is a cause for discussion because one sculpture is tortured, another is matter-of-fact, one painting is fanciful while another is subtly threatening.

The paintings are fun and fanciful with many interpretations, but perhaps only for me, as a Cuban American who has only seen photos and heard stories about Cuba. For three generations of Cubans, the rift between Cuba and the U.S.A. is geographical, political, cultural, and technological.

When you view these fantastical paintings and superb sculptures, remember that we are free in the U.S.A. to express ourselves. Remember those who fight for our freedoms, and remember those who have no voice.

Happy Birthday, United States of America! Happy Independence Day!

The exhibit is at the Children's Gallery and Art Center from June 25th through July 20th, 2011. The gallery is at 51 North Krome Avenue, Homestead, Florida and can reached through their website http://thechildrensgallery.community.officelive.com/default.aspx  and at 305.224.9386.

This is a review of the exhibit Cuban Yank Tanks. To view more of the art exhibit, please visit the Children's Gallery and Art Center, as there are so many wonderful pieces that it was impossible to include all of them in this blog post. The opinions and views of this review belong to Angeline and solely express her opinions.

About the Children's Gallery & Arts Center in Homestead, Florida

The Children's Gallery and Art Center is little art gem in Homestead, Florida. Homestead is about 45 minutes away from the art galleries in Coral Gables and Coconut Grove, 30 from The Falls area and Bird Road Art District, and over an hour to South Beach, Wynwood and Design Districts. The Children's Gallery works with some of the artists found at ArtSouth and the lucky few (like me!) who stumble upon their welcoming door.

Here are some quick links about the Children's Gallery and Arts Center:

Take Your Favorite Mom Out for Art in Coconut Grove, FL

This Saturday, May 7th, my art exhibit Florida Heat will be on display at Dharma Studio!!! You are invited, and if like me driving a little distance, make Coconut Grove your evening's plans!

Coconut Grove is a small town in Miami-Dade County that holds a monthly art stroll on the second Saturdays of the month. Coconut Grove is a wonderful place for an art stroll, due to its many restaurants, art galleries, bars, and night life. It is a casual place, easily walked if you can tear yourself away from an exhibit or shop. The restaurants range in tastes and prices, from American to Peruvian. There is something for everyone here, and it being Mothers' Day Weekend, it is a perfect night to take the family out for an adventure.

Some of the restaurants with their links:
- Jaguar (try their ceviche!)
- Johnny Rockets (used to spend a lot of time drinking chocolate milkshakes there, back in my day!)
- Mr. Moe's
- The Sandbar
- CocoWok (this is a play on CocoWalk, the central shopping & entertainment plaza in Coconut Grove)
- Al Fresco

The art stroll is organized by Coconut Grove Business Improvement District. For more about the Art Stroll, the blog Coconut Grove Grapevine is a great resource. There are many more dining choices listed in the link to the District. These are just a few places I have enjoyed over the years...and some I wish to taste.

Hope to see you there!!!! I will be at Dharma Studio with Jason Eldridge from 7pm to 10pm...after eating at one of the wonderful establishments!

Two monstrous figures made of paper mache, recycled, bottles, t-shirts, and corn cobs greeted Dafne and I when we entered the ArteAmericas exhibit at the Miami Beach Convention Center. We immediately enjoyed the meandering aisles of the exhibit, going from gallery to gallery. There were so much art...and some of the galleries were gracious to allow photographs.

The exhibit was worth the visit - and there is another upcoming exhibit with yours truly and Jason Eldridge. You are invited to share art at Dharma Studio in Coconut Grove on Saturday evening, May 7th with me. The exhibit will be of my landscapes and encaustic adventures. Hope to see you there!

Free Spirit #28 ©Fred Thomas
The exhibit See the Spirit by Fred Thomas opened the evening of February 12th, 2011 to cool breezes and bright colors. There is something for everyone at this exhibit to enjoy for at least one of the Free Spirits will make you smile.

Fred Thomas has created a large series of art work based on a design of a woman. This design is repeated in each of the works but with different media and colors. After he drew her once, Fred says he became obsessed and calls her Free Spirit. If you ask him who she is, she is simply a female who is standing in a small boat, arms outstretched with her hair lifted in the wind. She is the design, and the viewer's delight of this exhibit. There are probably more Free Spirits waiting for freedom in Fred's studio, but these are whimsical and happy.

The 101 Free Spirits are all the same size: 12 by 9 inches. The main supports observed were wood and canvas. Free Spirits exist as just paint, or collage, or metal work, or mixed media. The Children's Gallery curated the exhibit with finesse, because you must be told that there are so many Free Spirits to enjoy. It is a comfortable visit, and one can visit each Free Spirit  as it captures attention. The design is what captures the fancy and the wonderful imagination of the artist Fred Thomas keeps the viewer moving slowly from one Free Spirit to the next. Most visitors stopped and concentrated on their favorite Free Spirits, because it is nearly impossible to choose only one of the collection. There is a Free Spirit in this exhibit for everyone, it just has to be found.

The exhibit See the Spirit by Fred Thomas is open from February 12th through March 6, 2011 at the Children's Gallery of Homestead, Florida. For hours and information, please contact the gallery by telephone at 305-224-9386, website or by visiting 51 North Krome Avenue, Homestead, Florida, 33030.
