Restaurants in Homestead, Florida 2016

Homestead, Florida is surprising full of simple and good restaurants. This is a quick list of Andy (my husband!) and my favorite places, updated for you. No chain restaurants here! This list includes food places for all appetites. If a place was missed, share as a comment, please. 

Visit one before or after my Open Art Studio event on March 11 & 12th of this year.

Just want a snack? Try some of the best fruit milkshakes in this world are still at  Robert Is Here. However...Soriano Brothers has some great Cuban milkshakes (mamey and guava all year 'round).

For pizza and garlic rolls from heaven and a bueno-bonito-barato (good, pretty, cheap) experience, Mamma Mia's Italian Restaurant and Pizzeria 2 is STILL unbeatable. 

Andy and I have yet to find a great seafood place to enjoy in Homestead. Chefs on the Run does make great seafood dishes...but seafood is not their specialty. 

Stop by and get the best mofongo or Mongolian Beef in the South Florida area. Chefs On the Run of Homestead is the place for gourmet food and Puerto Rican delights. Daily specials are posted on their Facebook page. They were invited three years in a row to the South Beach Food and Wine Festival and two years won prizes. Amazing menu and mouth watering desserts await. You will leave happy! 

Mexican food without frills, Las Aztecas has great chips and salsa and is one of our favorite eateries. For a more upscale experience, try El Santo Coyote, where salsa is made at your table. If you prefer a seafood Mexican meal with many awesome dishes of choice in a comfortable setting, try El Rincon de Jalisco.

Even Homestead, Florida has a Starbucks. However, if you are looking for traditional Cuban sandwiches, cafe cubano, pastelitos, etc. for a picnic, go to Cuba Bakery.Otherwise, Mario's Latin Cafe has real Cuban food by Cuban cooks. If you like picnic style casual dining, the Cuban sandwiches and other yummies are wonderful at Soriano Brothers (have a shake with that). 

Suvi Thai and Sushi Restaurant has sushi and Thai food. All the food here is wonderful…if you are looking for hot and spicy, pay attention when the servers ask you to rate how hot!

Three different ice cream experiences are in Homestead. For Cuban and tropical flavor ice cream, visit 4 JJJJ Pizzeria, Ice Cream, and Restaurant. For Mexican flavors, La Michoacana Mexican was recommended by the Miami Herald. 

Want really good United States American food? Check out the Redland Grill or theWhistle Stop for great "comfort food."

Is it evening? Sing karaoke at the Mutineer Wharf Bar and say hello to DJ Jim on a Wednesday or Thursday night. Enjoy awesome martini's at Flager's Martini Bar (say hi to Lynn, Mary, & Stephanie). The Dade Country Jail Bar rocks most weekend evenings, too, with some cold beers and great bands. Both Flagler's and Jail have been open in Homestead for almost two years at the writing of this post...and we hope they stay because we like both!

Halloween Design Progress

When I was little, I wasn't thrilled by having a scary, howling, dark, cold holiday close to my birthday. Now, Halloween is so much MORE that I love it! 

I've always wanted to paint a Halloween themed design...just was never thrilled with the still life options out there. Pumpkins, alone? Boring. Black cat? Ok...but....

Andy and I were out shopping today and saw a dog skeleton. I gasped. I want. I just ran out to our back patio to confirm that the dog skeleton is way too big with Andy and he said "yes, it was way too big for your studio." Ah, well. I am so happy with the cat and bird I picked up this year (along with some boring pumpkins!) that all is well. 

You'll recognize the bird from the sketchbook, eh?

Cherries in Blue Glass Oil Painting

Luscious red cherries sit in a shadowy blue glass. 

These cherries are rendered in my favorite deep red colors. 

This painting was done with a palette knife. It is proving to be a lot of fun setting up still lives and painting them in oil paints. I have a growing collection of objects in my studio for paintings. For things that eventually ripen too much, well, I have some superb fakes as well as photographs to use.

If you receive my newsletter email, you would already know it's all Leslie Saeta's fault. 

It's because of taking her workshop this past June for palette knife painting that I have fallen in love with still lives (arranged objects) and other things. It's also her fault that I have truly used up a couple of tubes of OIL PAINT. 

See, the oil paints she uses are water mixable. That means that there is WAY LESS toxicity...and faster drying times...and yet the paint is slick, smooth, and moves. Very different than acrylics. Acrylics will remain my first love...but oh these oil paints! It's all Leslie's fault. 

When I wonder what to paint, I'm going to palette knife techniques and oil paints. You'll see what I mean next week. 

Oh! Last week is the LAST full week of 30 Paintings in 30 Days!!!! YIPPPEEE!!! LOL

I hate oil paint. 

IT IS ALL LESLIE SAETA'S FAULT!!!!

Leslie for the last few years has held a 12 Days of Christmas contest. She randomly counts the comments left on her blog and chooses a raffle winner. I was the lucky winner of a workshop palette knife painting. 

Karson is over my shoulder, asking me to type "K," to put a big 

KARSON right here. She oooohed. 

LOL. That means I gotta go watch the movie with her. 

As I type this...we already left our two fun loving adorable girls back in the mid-West U.S. We're home. But everything above these couple of sentences were written while there.

Days 24 and 25 of 30 Paintings in 30 Days

The first painting in this blog post is truly a drawing using mixed media. Husband Andy and I spent the day putting up the ceiling inside of his shed. Talk about a full body workout!!! In a few minutes here and there, I sketched out his work table full of tools. This is just a slice of that table. He many items impressively placed rather neatly on his tool work table. Tools I know how to use and some I have no name or clue. The table used to be in my studio, which explains the green tinge on the table of the design. The words were already on the wood, hence the title, LOL. 

The second painting you will see again if you receive my email newsletters (these blog posts, lol). It is my featured painting for April. April colors are white, black, and yellow and its gem is the diamond. I wasn't sure how this was going to turn out...but really quite like it. Back story to this one is that the calendar pages this year will each feature the colors belonging to the month. June is proving to be the most challenging so far (greens, go figure).

Expiring Painting Series No. 1

My studio recently gave up some very useful canvases, but all of them have a finished painting already.

This is the first painting in 2013 that expires. It is 8 by 10 inches, acrylics on canvas, circa 2004 or 2005, by me.

The expiration date for this painting is Saturday, February 5th, 2013. To purchase, click here or on the button.

If you like it, it is for sale at the shipping included price of $40. Again, the painting expires February 5th, when I reclaim the canvas for other projects.

$40 is a steal for an original painting.

You can buy it here or let the painting expire.

Expiring paintings at minimum help by the reclaiming of art supplies. This helps make space for new art and projects. There are enough reminders of my art growth in my studio and out in the world that these won't be missed, by me, any way.

If it stays...then I get to re-use the canvas. Believe me, I've already been tempted to use it. ;)

Take Over the Kitchen Table

When all else fails, the kitchen table works like a charm for making mixed media paintings.


The flowers were a gift from Terry at A Flower for Everyone in Homestead, Florida. He insisted I take them as a sample. I chucked my list of honey-does for an hour to just savor them.


These were the result of my brief kitchen take over. They are hanging in my work space right now. If you would like them to hang in your space, please let me know.


They are all mixed media, 7x5 inches on paper. Pencil, watercolor, glue, and a few flower petals were used in each creation.

Flower Bouquet - Hot Off the Easel

On a Key West sunny day during the encaustic workshop, this showed up on the wood panel while playing.

Poor encaustic painting of flowers, sitting in my studio since January, but something was still needed. A dash of startling white on the vase...and now finished. 


Sometimes, it seems that a painting is never finished until that one "AAAAAH HAAAA!" moment. In two minutes, the painting is finished. Other times, the painting is finished a few hours - the brain dump occurrence after thinking about something all week long.
